Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the title compsn. which changes color tones in accordance with the intensity of radiated light and is suited for use as a cosmetic base etc., and which comprises resin beads composed of a polymer of a hydrophobic vinyl monomer and, homogeneously dispersed therein, a photochromic substance. CONSTITUTION:The title compsn. comprises resin beads composed of a polymer of a hydrophobic vinyl monomer (e.g., polymers of a styrene monomer or an acrylic monomer) and, homogeneously dispersed therein, a photochromic substance (e.g., spiropyran). This compsn. changes color tones in accordance with the intensity of radiated light and is suited for use as a cosmetic base or a base material of a decoration material. In the production of this compsn., a hydrophobic vinyl monomer dispersed in an aq. medium is subjected to polymn. reaction using as a polymn. initiator a radical polymn. initiator (e.g., 2,2'- azobisisobutyronitrile) free from a benzene ring and a carboxyl group, and a photochromic substance is incorporated in the reaction system. When an initiator such as benzoyl peroxide is used, color change is insufficient and so the compsn. is practically inapplicable.
