Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an epoxy resin of improved performance, by performing the addition reaction of an adduct of an epoxy compound with a specified compound with an epichlorohydrin and further converting the formed chlorohydrin compound into an epoxy compound. CONSTITUTION:The addition reaction of an epoxy compound with the alcoholic hydroxyl group of a compound having at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group and at least one carboxyl group or a phenolic hydroxyl group in the molecule is performed substantially selectively in an inert solvent or in the absence of any solvent by using a Lewis acid catalyst. The Lewis acid is neutralized with, e.g., an alkali hydroxide and an epichlorohydrin in excess over the carboxyl groups or the phenolic hydroxyl groups is added to the mixture to effect the addition reaction of the epichlorohydrin with the carboxyl groups or the phenolic hydroxyl groups by using, e.g., a quat. ammonium salt catalyst. The formed chlorohydrin compound is converted into an epoxy compound by using an alkali hydroxide and is separated from salts and unreacted epichlorohydrin.
