Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an emulsion which can be stably dispersed in water and can exhibit improved properties, by chain-extending a specified free isocyanate group-containing urethane polymer with a polyamine compound in the presence of a specified emulsifier and water. CONSTITUTION:An emulsion obtained by chain-extending a free isocyanate group-containing urethane polymer obtained by reacting at least one compound having an MW of 200-10,000 and at least two active hydrogen atoms. with an excess of a polyisocyanate and, optionally, a low-MW chain extender having at least two active hydrogen atoms. with a polyamine compound having at least two prim. and/or sec. amino groups in the molecule in the presence of an emulsifier and water, wherein (a) said urethane polymer is one having a free isocyanate group content of 1.5-0.2wt.% and obtained by reacting at an NCO to OH molar ratio of 1.2-1.02, and (b) said emulsifier is a polyoxyethylene arylphenol ether type nonionic surfactant of an HLB of 6-18 and is used in an amount of 2-15wt.% based on the urethane resin.
