Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a high isolation ratio and high single mode fiber coupling efficiency by forming a channel type light guide having the depth of the guide at which the propagation constants of two guide modes propagating in the light guide nearly coincide with each other. CONSTITUTION:The channel type light guide 2, the depth of the guide of which is designated as T and the width as W, has the depth T at which the propagation constants of the two guide modes (TE mode and TM mode) propagating in the light guide nearly coincide with each other. T and W have the values to constitute the single mode channel type guide in which only the basic modes of the TE mode and TM mode can propagate. This channel type thin film light guide consists of a magneto-optical material formed on a garnet crystal substrate 1. The garnet crystal substrate 1 is preferably a GGG crystal substrate and the magneto-optical material is preferably Bi-substd. YIG in particular for its small saturation magnetization.
