Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composite having excellent hardness, bending strength, breaking toughness, etc., and useful as a material for cutting tool or abrasion-resistant tool, by adding powder and/or whisker of Al2O3 to a mixture of a specific organic compound and a solvent, stirring and drying the obtained mixture and carbonizing the mixture by heating in vacuum or nonoxidizing gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:(A) A mixture of (a) a prescribed amount of an organic compound (e.g. resol phenolic polymer) selected from vinyl compound, polymeric compound and their precursor and (b) a solvent capable of dissolving the component (a) (e.g. methanol or phenol) is added with (B) powder and/or whisker of Al2O3 having an average particle diameter of <=2mum and the obtained mixture is dried. The product is pressed as necessary and heated at 500-1,000 deg.C in vacuum or in a nonoxidizing gas such as Ar, N2 or H2 to effect the carbonization of the component (a). The titled composite composed of the component B coated with 0.03-3wt.% of carbon is produced by this process.
