Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure that even when one of four color inks runs out, printing can be continued through using one of the other color inks in place of the lost color ink, by providing a means for detecting the residual amounts of color inks, and a switching means for switching from one of the color inks to another one of the color inks when the residual amount of the one of the color inks reaches a predeterined value. CONSTITUTION:When the residual amount of an ink M is reduced below a predeterined value, a switching control signal 31 is inputted, and a switching circuit 33a is operated by a magenta-controlling circuit 32. By this, an R control signal 24 is inputted only to an OR circuit 40b, and a head for an ink Y is driven by a Y signal 42 to print in the ink Y. Namely, when the residual amount of the ink M becomes small, a part to be printed in R is printed in Y, a part to be printed in B is printed in C, and a part to be printed in M is printed in Bl, whereby it is possible to prevent defective printing even upon the occurrence of run-out of one of the inks during printing, as far as the other inks are present. Thus, when the residual amount of one color ink is reduced below a predetermined value, the part to be printed in the one color ink is printed in other color ink, whereby printing can be continued without interruption.
