Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily obtain water absorptive fibers having excellent water absorbing ratio in a low cost by subjecting a thin layer resin laminated material forming a low melting point synthetic resin layer on the outer surface of a high melting point synthetic resin layer to corona discharge treatment and fuse-adhering a powdery polymer water absorbing agent to splitted opened fibers. CONSTITUTION: For instance, a thin layer material obtained by laminating a low melting point synthetic resin 3 (e.g. low density polyethylene) on the outer surface of a high melting point synthetic resin 2 comprising a crystalline polypropylene, etc., is subjected to corona discharging treatment and opened fibers 1 are made by splitting, then the opened fibers 1 are heated about melting point of the low melting point synthetic resin, thus a polymer water absorbing agent 4 having 500-1,000 water absorbing ratio, e.g. fine particles of an acrylic acid-vinyl alcohol copolymer are brought into contact with the opened fibers 1 to fuse the polymer water absorptive agent on the outer surface of the low melting point synthetic resin layer. This water absorptive fiber has more excellent water absorbing ratio than usual are readily handleable and so useful as a waterproof covering material for a conduction cable. The polymer water absorptive agent is readily and uniformly fusible to contrive reduction of a cost.
