Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately measure the diameter of a rod material being ground by scanning reciprocally and projecting laser light on a body to be measured and measuring the diameter of the object body from the time when the laser light is cut off by averaging measured values in the forward and backward strokes of the laser light. CONSTITUTION:A laser device 9 fitted to the exit side of a grinding wheel 8 is scanned reciprocally and sectorially from one internal side of a U-shaped frame while including the section of the material to be ground. Diameter information is found from the time when the laser light is cut off by the material 11 to be ground during forward and backward scanning, and averaged. This signal is digitized by a display and signal processing part 2 and sent to a central processing unit 3. The central processing unit 3 feeds a forward/backward movement signal S back according to the value and other data.
