Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a trouble from being generated when an operator forgets to perform a setting operation, by detecting the thickness of a paper and automatically adjusting the gap between a printing head and a platen. CONSTITUTION:In setting printing paper, the paper is passed through a paper thickness sensor 5, whereby a voltage corresponding to the thickness of the paper is generated, the voltage is inputted to an amplifier 6, and an output from the amplifier is inputted to an A-D converter 7. A microcomputer 8 takes three samples of digital value of the paper thickness, and takes as average of the three values to determine the paper thickness. Next, prestored stepping motor driving information corresponding to the paper thickness is read, and is sent to a stepping motor 9 as a driving pulse. The stepping motor 9 thus supplied with the driving pulse generates a torque, which is transmitted to a cam 3 to drive a base for a printing head 1. By this, the position of the printing head, namely, the gap between the printing head and a platen is adjusted to an appropiate value, so that to trouble is generated when an operator forgets to set an adjusting lever.

Conventional devices detect the thickness of the recording medium (paper), but feed back the detected data to the charging/deflection circuit of the inkjet, as described in, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 59-162062. Therefore, no consideration was given to application to dot printers.

In the conventional method of adjusting the gap between the print head and platen using a lever operated by an operator, if the lever is forgotten and the gap is too small, paper jams, line feed errors, ink ribbon jams, etc. occur, and if the gap is too large, printing is not possible or printing is impossible. There was a problem in that it was easy to cause problems such as blurring.

The paper thickness sensor generates a voltage depending on the thickness of the paper passing through the sensor, which is led to an amplifier and amplified.
- Input as a digital signal to the microcomputer through the D converter, and refer to a pre-stored correspondence table between the digital value of paper thickness and the optimal gap, and send out a drive pulse for gap adjustment to the step motor. In response to this pulse, the motor and gears rotate, allowing the cam to slide the print head back and forth.

FIG. 2 shows a perspective view of the print head position adjustment section. The step motor 9 receives a drive pulse and rotates, and torque is transmitted to the cam 3 by gear (A) 10 and gear (B) 11 to print. The pedestal of the head 1 is driven.
