In the past, various types of double-sided copying devices have been proposed that form images on both sides of a sheet (including those called copy paper and transfer paper). The sheet that has been copied on one side is guided again to the original paper feed unit or another second paper feed unit, and then the other side of the sheet is sent to the copy processing unit again and the back side is copied in the same way as the front side. There is a form of doing this, but
This can be said to be the most practical double-sided copying apparatus because only one set of copy processing units is required and the structure is simple and compact.

However, even in this type of double-sided copying machine, if it is equipped with an automatic document feed mechanism (A, D, F), a sheet storage tray, a sheet sorting device (sorter), etc., it is not possible to copy the front side or the back side. The state of the front and back surfaces of the ejected sheet may change in the opposite direction, or the state of the front and back surfaces may change depending on the selection of the conveyance path of the sheet, etc., and a complicated reversal selection is required. If a sheet jam occurs, especially during copying of the front or back side, it may be necessary to make copies from the same original again to compensate for the remaining number of copies. The selection of reversal may differ depending on the time of the clog, making the operation extremely complicated and reducing copying efficiency.

That is, the present invention achieves the above object by temporarily storing a sheet in which an image of a first original surface is copied onto the first side in a relay tray, and then copying an image of a second original surface onto the second side of the sheet. In a double-sided copying device that copies on the side,
If a jam occurs while copying the second side of the sheet, the second side of the sheet remaining in the relay tray is placed on the second side of the sheet remaining in the relay tray in order to compensate for the insufficient number of copies.
After completing the copying of the image on the document surface, and then copying the image on the second document surface onto the first side of a new sheet fed from the paper feed unit, temporarily storing the image in the relay tray, Then, the image of the first document surface is transferred to the second document surface of the sheet.
It is characterized by being configured to copy on the front side.

Hereinafter, one embodiment of the present invention will be explained in detail with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a sectional view of a copying apparatus according to the present invention, which is equipped with a document feeder and a sorter. The operation of this embodiment will now be explained with reference to FIG. First, in one-sided copying, the topmost original O 1 stacked on the first original tray 1 is transferred to the paper feed roller 2 by the signals from the one-sided mode button 109 and the copy start button 115.
The document is sent out by the conveyor rollers 3a, 3b and the belt 5 stretched by the rollers 4a, 4b, and is transferred onto the transparent plate 6 of the document table. At this time, the conveying roller 3a rotates in the A direction, which is the forward feeding direction, and the conveying roller 3b rotates in the B direction, which is the opposite direction, to prevent double feeding of documents. The sensor 7 detects the passing of the leading edge of the document O1 , and
A motor (not shown), which is a driving source for the conveyance rollers 3a, 3b and rollers 4a, 4b, is activated by the signal.
to stop the original O1 at an appropriate position on the original glass 6. At this time, in order to eliminate variations in the stopping position of the original O 1 due to the inertia of the motor, the belt 5 is moved to the original glass 6 by the signal from the sensor 7.
The presser rollers 8a and 8b, which are applying tension to the belt 5 so as to press it against the belt 5, are swung toward the side where they are removed from the belt 5 (indicated by broken lines in the figure), thereby removing the conveying force of the belt 5. A mechanism is used to position the document by abutting the leading edge of the document. A sensor 7 is placed in front of the abutting member 9. After the sensor 7 detects the leading edge of the document, a certain amount of the document is sent to the abutting member 9. In order to prevent the document from being wrinkled or folded, the method of removing the belt conveyance D as described above is adopted.

The surface of the drum 16 consists of a photoreceptor with a photosensitive layer covered with a transparent insulating layer, and the photoreceptor is first connected to a high voltage power source 1.
It is positively charged by a positive charger 18 to which a positive high-voltage current is supplied from 7. Subsequently, upon reaching the exposure section 19, the original O1 on the transparent plate 6 of the original table is illuminated by the illumination lamp 15, and moved by the movable reflection mirror 10,
11 and lens 12, fixed reflection mirrors 13, 14
An image is formed on the drum 16 by the following. The photoreceptor receives an AC discharge from an AC discharger 20 to which an AC high voltage current is supplied from a high voltage power supply 17 at the same time as the original image is exposed to the photoreceptor. Next, the entire surface is exposed by the entire surface exposure lamp 21, and an electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of the photosensitive drum, which enters the developing device 22. Development is performed by powder development using a magnetic sleeve method, and the electrostatic latent image is visualized. Next, the copy paper S is sent out from the paper feed section, and the relay tray 23 and first paper feed tray 24 of the paper feed section are of the cassette type, and the second paper feed tray 25 is equipped with an automatic paper lifting device. It is a deck type that can load a relatively large number of sheets. Although the details will be described later, the relay tray 23 is also used as a paper feed table during double-sided copying.

On the other hand, the remaining toner on the drum is cleaned by the blade 32 pressed against the drum surface (photoreceptor), and the next cycle can be repeated again. The copy sheet S that has completed fixing heads toward the exit (tray or sorter) designated in advance by the operator, but on the way, if a tray is selected and instructed, a guide 34 activated by the exit designation signal is shown. The sorter 37 is oscillated in the middle broken line area, or in the solid line area if the sorter 37 is selected, and the transfer paper S is guided to the respective exits. Further, as will be described later, there is an additional branch path when going to the relay tray 23 and reversing section 46, but first, in the case of single-sided copying, the guide guides 33 and 38 are activated by the signal of the single-sided copy mode button on. The copy paper S is located as indicated by the broken line in the figure, and the copy paper S is guided to a predetermined designated exit by switching the guide 34. In this case, when a plurality of copies are to be made from the same original, a sensor 39 provided at the exposure start position of the optical system detects the return of the optical system and issues a signal to start re-exposure.
When the last copy sheet of the set number of sheets passes through the sensor 40 or 41 provided near the designated exit, the copying of the original O1 is terminated by the detection signal. If there is a document to be copied continuously, the sensor 40
Alternatively, the uppermost original in the first original tray 1 is sent out by the signal 41, and stopped at the proper position on the original glass 6 as described above, and at the same time, the original O 1 on the original glass 6 is also moved by the transport rollers 4a, 4b, and ejected. Rollers 42a, 42b, 43a, 43b, 4
4a and 44b, the document is fed into the second document tray 49 via the main path 47. Thereafter, the same copying process as described above is repeated until all the originals in the first original tray 1 have been copied. If a jam occurs during copying, the apparatus immediately stops and the operator turns on the copy start button after processing the jammed paper to make up for the shortfall in the number of copies due to the jam and copy the set number of copies.

Next, the operation during double-sided copying will be explained. Second
The image to be copied on one side as shown in the figure,...
Sheet-like originals O 1 , O 2 . . . 2
...S n Copying is performed so as to form images on both sides.
First, when the duplex mode button is turned on and then the copy start button is turned on, the original O 1 is fed onto the original glass 6 . After exposure and development are performed using the original O 1 , the copy sheet S 1 fed and conveyed from the first sheet feeding tray 24 or the second sheet feeding tray 25 is transferred and fixed, and sent to the reversing section 46 for the next step. First, since the guide 33 is for duplex copying mode selection and first side copying, it is displaced to the position indicated by the solid line in the figure, and the fed copy paper is guided toward the reversing section 46. At this time, the paper conveying rollers 50a and 50b are rotating in the direction of arrow C to convey the copy paper. When the trailing edge of the paper passes the guide 33, the sensor 5
1, the paper conveyance rollers 50a and 50b start rotating in reverse and return the copy paper in the direction of arrow D. At this time, due to the stiffness of the paper, the copy paper advances toward the next conveyance rollers 50c and 50d, and is conveyed while being held therein. The trailing edge of the paper (the leading edge above) is the paper conveyance roller 5.
When the sensor detects that the paper passes through 0a and 50b, the paper conveying roller stops rotating in the direction of arrow D and switches to rotating in the direction of arrow C in preparation for the arrival of the next copy sheet. . Paper conveying roller 50
The rotation of a and 50b is controlled by a signal from a sensor 51. The conveyed copy paper is conveyed through the conveyance path 5.
2 and 53, and is stored in the relay tray 23.
At this time, the guides 34 and 38 are both positioned as shown by solid lines due to the duplex mode selection signal. As shown in the figure, the relay tray 23 is configured such that the paper feed port side is lowered compared to the opposite side, and the leading edge of the copy paper is aligned with the paper feed port side due to its own weight, and when the next second side is copied, Paper feeding has become easier. When the set number of first side copies are made and all of them are stored in the relay tray 23, the first side copying is completed. Then the second
The original O 2 on the front side is sent out by the paper feed roller 2 and transported to a fixed position on the original glass 6. At the same time, the guides 54 and 55 are positioned as shown by the solid line in the figure, so the original O 1 is sent out on route 47,
When the sensor 56 detects the passage of the trailing edge of the document O 1 , a clutch (not shown) cuts off the drive of the conveyance rollers 42 a, 42 b, 43 a, and 43 b, and the document O 1 is stopped in the main path 47 .

Copying on the second side is started when the sensor 7 detects the leading edge of the original O 2 . The copy paper in the relay tray 23 is sent out to a conveyance path 58 by a paper feed roller 57, and is discharged to a designated exit after undergoing the processes of exposure, development, transfer, and fixing in the same manner as the first side copying. At this time, the guides 33, 34, and 38 are switched to the designated exit side by the signal to start copying the second side. At this time, if the designated exit is a sorter, it passes through the reversing section 46 to align the pages.
The guides 33, 34, and 38 are controlled so that the paper is rotated and directed toward the sorter. The last sheet of the set number of sheets is detected by sensor 4 without any problems such as jamming.
If 0 or 41 is detected, the operation shifts to copying the next original, O3 . At this time, the main route 47
The document O 1 inside is discharged to the second document tray 49 by transport rollers 43a, 43b and discharge rollers 44a, 44b. At the same time, the original O 2 is also discharged and stacked on the second original tray 49 above the original O 1 via the main path 47 .

The operation of the device in a normal state has been described above, but the operation in a special state will be described below. First, if a jam occurs while copying the first side of original O 1 , the device will stop in the same way as it does during single-sided copying, and after processing the jammed paper by operation, it will start copying again and copy the missing copy due to the jam. Make up for the number of copies and make copies for the set number of copies. Next, if a jam occurs while copying the second side of the original O 2 , the device will similarly stop and restart after the jam has been cleared, and all the first side copies left in the relay tray 23 will be processed. , all copies are made on the second side, and after being ejected to the specified outlet, the original O 2 is again copied by the first side copying operation on the copy sheets in the specified paper feed table by the number of sheets missing due to the jam. That is, the paper on which one side (the image of the original O 2 ) has been copied is sent to the relay tray 23 .
After copying the original O 2 , the original O 2 goes through a different route (bypass)
At the position where the rear end of the document O 2 is detected by the sensor 59, the driving of the conveyance rollers 42a, 42b, 45a, and 45b is cut off by the electromagnetic clutch, and the document O2 is stopped in the bypass 48. At this time, the abutting member 9 is lifted upward by the plunger and escapes so as not to obstruct the progress of the original O2 .
Further, the guide 54 is controlled by a plunger or the like (not shown) so that the guide 54 is in the state shown by the solid line in the figure, and the guide 55 is shown in the state shown by the broken line in the figure, that is, the document O 2 is guided to the bypass 48. As described above, when the trailing edge of the original O 2 is detected by the sensor 59, the guide 54 switches to the state shown by the broken line in the figure, and the guide 55 switches to the state shown by the solid line shown in the figure to prepare for the reverse movement of the original O 1 . and,
The document O 1 stopped in the main path 47 is transferred to the transport rollers 42a, 42b, 43a, 43b and the roller 4.
The sensor 7 detects the trailing edge of the original O 1 fed onto the original glass 6 by the reverse rotation of the originals a and 4b, and the original O 1 is temporarily stopped. Next, in order to align the leading edge of original O 1 that is opened during normal copying (that is, the same as the trailing edge that has just been detected by sensor 7) to the predetermined position, The belt is rotated in the traveling direction), and the abutment member 9
Place the leading edge of document O 1 on the belt to stop the belt. In this way, the original returned in the opposite direction
The tips of O 1 will line up properly. In this state, the second side copying operation of the original O1 is performed to complete the double-sided copying of the missing part. Next, the copy paper that has been copied on the second side of the original O 1 is ejected to the specified outlet, which is a tray or sorter, but the copy paper after the number of sheets is compensated for after jamming when copying the second side is ,
Since the front and back sides are reversed compared to the copy paper before compensation, it is necessary to flip it once to align the pages. Therefore, in the embodiment of the present invention, when the designated outlet is a tray, the copy paper for the number compensation is controlled to be reversed once in the reversing section 46 before reaching the tray,
When the designated outlet is a sorter, on the other hand, copy sheets before the number of sheets are inverted once in the reversing section 46 and then discharged to the sorter, whereas those for the number of sheets are passed through the reversing section 46. It is controlled so that it does not occur. When the last sheet of paper after copying on the second side is ejected to the designated outlet, the original O 1 is ejected to the second original tray 49 via the main path 47, and then the original O 2 is ejected from the bypass (original holding section) 48 to the second original tray 49. The document O1 is discharged and stacked on the document O1 in the second document tray 49. Of course, the abutting member 9 escapes so as not to impede the progress of the original O1 .

Due to the above-described operation, the stacking order of the documents O 1 and O 2 in the second document tray 49 is not disturbed, and by providing the bypass 48, the order of stacking the documents O 1 and O 2 is not disturbed.
In a jam during double-sided copying, the original on the first side can be automatically returned to the document table, which is very convenient because the copying time is shortened. In the above-mentioned embodiment, in order to perform copying to compensate for the number of copies when a jam occurs during copying on the second side of a sheet, first the original for the second side (in the description of the embodiment, the original
O 2 ) is first copied to compensate for the number of copies, and then the automatic document feed mechanism equipped with a bypass 48 automatically transfers the first side document (original in the embodiment).
O 1 ) is called back and copies are made to the second side of the back side, but even if there is no automatic document feed mechanism, the number of copies is compensated for by leaving the original O 2 for the second side as it is. I ended up copying the
Next, this can be done by replacing it with the original for the first side or by displaying it as such.
