Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the load of an operator by indicating a word inflecting within a translated and outputted sentence on a display picture and obtaining the inflection information of said indicated word to correct the unnatural tense, quantity and person in the translated sentence. CONSTITUTION:Each syntax element of a translated sentence is set opposite to each corresponding element in a translation dictionary by a pointer for maintenance of each pointer information. At the same time, the translated sentence is displayed by a display device D like a CRT, etc., contained in a symbol output device 4. For instance, the tense of a verb 'wrote' is changed. In this case, the 'wrote' in the translated sentence is indicated by a cursor, etc., on a display screen D so that the reference is possible to the verb conjugated from the present form on the screen D. In such a way, a word to be changed is indicated by the cursor, etc., on the screen D and the English heading and the inflection form indicated by the pointer of the relevant word are extracted out of the translation dictionary. Then all inflection forms of the English heading are shown in a prescribed area L on the screen D and exchanged with the indicated words/phrases in the translated sentence.

(b) Conventional technology The development of machine translation processing systems that use computers to translate sentences from Japanese to English or from English to Japanese is rapidly progressing, and Nikkei Electronics published August 4, 1983. Article 1: ``How a Japanese machine translation system with prospects for practical use works'' is detailed.

Of course, the way to express tenses and quantities is different between the original M word, such as Japanese, and other foreign languages, such as pod A6, and the meaning in one language cannot often be expressed in the other by just a literal translation. For example, if a word string such as ``sinking ship'' can be fully translated, a translation such as ``A 5unken 5hip J'' will be obtained. However, this is 'A si
It can also be interpreted as nking 5hip J.

of a 5ociety, J. In this way, if there are inconsistencies in tense or quantity after translation, post-editing by the machine translation system operator is required. You will have to rely on dictionaries etc.

Figure 1 shows the Japanese-English translation dictionary (30). (32), English grammar information (33), and English headings (34). English grammar information possesses syntactic information about each word as well as information about word changes such as plural, past tense, past participle, present continuous, and third person singular. For example, for verbs, Japanese The English heading 'write J' for the word entry 'write' can have four forms: past, past participle, present continuous, and personal singular.
, 'ken ritten', 'gariting J
, 'WriteS'. Similarly, for nouns, the English heading 'the' which corresponds to the Japanese heading 'paper'
'sis' can only be changed into plural form, 'the
An example of a machine translation system using the present invention of order 0 with ses J will be described.

Here, when translating from the original Japanese text to English, we will introduce words that are expressed in inappropriate tenses or quantities in the translated text.
In the translation, use the cursor to indicate the English m-word on the display screen to change it to a word with the appropriate tense and quantity. For example, from ``He wrote the paper'', ' He wrote a theS It is translated as , ,1. At this time, as shown in FIG. 1, each syntactic element of the translated sentence is associated with each corresponding element in the translation dictionary by a pointer (P), and each pointer information is maintained. Also, the translation at this time is the symbol output device (4) in Figure 2.
The information is displayed on a display device (D) such as a CRT included in the computer as shown in FIG. Here, if you want to change the tense of the verb 'wrote J', select
By pointing with a cursor or the like, the verb variations from the four types of present tense mentioned above can be referenced on the display screen. Searching for an inflection pattern in a translation dictionary from a specified word in a translated sentence is performed as follows. As shown in FIG. 3, a word that needs to be changed is indicated by a cursor or the like on the display screen, and the English heading of the word pointed to by the pointer and its variations are retrieved from the translation dictionary. Then, on the display screen, the variation engraving of the English heading is shown in a predetermined area (L), and the most appropriate form is indicated by the operator using the associated number, etc. can be replaced with the indicated word or phrase.

The present invention is of course effective for languages other than English, and is also effective for cases where one wants to intentionally change tense or quantity, or when one wants to refer to the inflection of a word.

(G) Effects of the Invention As described above, part-of-speech transformation processing in post-editing, which conventionally referred to commonly existing English-Japanese dictionaries, can be efficiently performed using information existing in the translation dictionary. Therefore,
It is hoped that the burden on the operator will be reduced and the efficiency of translation processing will be improved.
