FIG. 1 is an explanatory diagram of a transfer device using this conventional transfer roller, in which a transfer material 3 is charged by a corona discharger 4 to a polarity opposite to that of the toner image 2 on the photosensitive drum.
The transfer roller 5 is composed of a metal roller 7 having an insulating layer 6 on its surface. As a result, the transfer material 3 is electrostatically supported on the roller 5 by the electric charge from the discharger 4 and the electric charge which has the opposite polarity and is induced on the roller 7.
Thereafter, the toner image on the photosensitive drum 1 is transferred.

In the figure, a photosensitive drum 10 has a conductive support layer 1
a, a photoconductive layer 1b, and an insulating layer 1c, and rotates in the direction of arrow A. The surface of the photosensitive drum 1 is first uniformly charged by a primary charger 11, and then simultaneously with image exposure by a projection lens 12, a corona discharger 13 performs secondary charging with a polarity opposite to this primary charging or neutralization by AC corona. The photosensitive drum 1 is then exposed 14 on the entire surface.
An electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of 0. This electrostatic latent image is then developed with toner in a dry or wet developing device 15.

On the other hand, the surface of the photosensitive drum 10 is negatively charged with the same polarity as the toner by a corona discharger 16 prior to transfer. As a result, the toner image that has already been transferred onto the transfer material returns to the photosensitive drum, reducing the image quality, and the toner image that is about to be transferred on the photosensitive drum may be transferred before the transfer material has fully adhered to the photosensitive drum. , to prevent deterioration of image quality due to the toner image being transferred to the transfer material.

The reason why the above configuration is particularly preferable for a transfer device that forms a multicolor image by sequentially overlapping color toners is as follows. First, the entire surface of the transfer material is electrostatically attracted to the transfer roller 19. Therefore, there is no possibility that the transfer material moves during multiple transfers, causing image shift in the transferred toner images. Further, the polarity of the corona discharge for adsorbing the transfer material to the roller 19 is the same as that of the toner image, and the corona discharge applied in advance to the toner image on the photosensitive drum before transfer is the same as that of the toner image. In that it has the same polarity as corona discharge, it not only allows the transfer material to be sufficiently supported by pressing it against the transfer roller, but also allows the toner image on the transfer material that has been transferred once to be transferred to the photosensitive drum before the next transfer. Since it is possible to prevent color jumps, it is possible to form a good color image without color shift or blurring.

As a result, there is no positional shift due to adsorption of the transfer material, and even in repeated multiple transfers using color toner, there is no movement of toner between the transfer material and the photosensitive drum before transfer, resulting in clear color images with no color shift.
