Conventionally, various catalytic converters in which a monolithic catalyst is held in a case have been proposed and adopted. These catalytic converters elastically hold the monolithic catalyst in the axial or radial direction of the case.
A cylindrical cushion member or an annular cushion member is disposed between the case and the cushion member, which undergoes plastic deformation due to the heat of the exhaust gas itself and the heat of the catalytic reaction. There will be a slight gap between the two. Therefore, vibrations of the engine, the vehicle body, etc. cause a collision between the cushion member and the monolith catalyst, resulting in a problem that the monolith catalyst or the cushion member is damaged.

The present invention was proposed in view of the above, and includes a catalytic converter for exhaust gas purification in which a monolithic catalyst is held within the case. The gist of the present invention is a catalytic converter characterized in that it is fixed by electric resistance welding to a flange member that is fixed or integrally formed with a case.

An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to FIGS. 1 to 4. 2 shows a catalytic converter in which a monolithic catalyst 6 is held within a case 4. Case 4 is
It has a manifold 8 that communicates with an exhaust port of an engine (not shown), and a lower case 12 that is fixed to the manifold 8 via bolts 10. 14
is a protector whose outer circumferential surface 16 is held between the mating surfaces of the manifold 8 and lower case 12, and whose inner circumferential surface 1
8 is bent into a cylindrical shape along the axial direction of the case 4, and an annular cushion member 20 is interposed between the protector 14 and the exhaust gas upstream end surface 21 of the monolithic catalyst 6. 22 is an annular cushion member interposed between the lower case 12 and the downstream end surface 24 of the monolithic catalyst 6.

The cushion members 20 and 22 are formed by compressing steel wires woven into a wire mesh shape into an annular shape. The cushion member 22 is disposed within the lower case 12, and the cushion member 20 is placed at an appropriate position. ... is spot welded to the protector 14. A cylindrical holding member 26 is disposed between the outer circumferential surface of the monolithic catalyst 6 and the inner circumferential surface of the lower case 12 and is formed by stacking a plurality of wire mesh members.

According to the present embodiment, exhaust gas flows from the manifold 8, passes through the monolith catalyst 6, and is discharged from the lower case 12 to an exhaust pipe (not shown). At this time, due to the shape of the manifold 8 and the presence of the protector 14, the exhaust gas does not bypass the monolith catalyst 6, and substantially all of the exhaust gas is purified by the monolith catalyst 6.

Further, the vibrations in the vertical direction shown in FIG. 14 by spot welding,
Further, since the protector 14 is held between the mating surfaces of the manifold 8 and the lower case 2, the cushion member 20 is held integrally with the case 4 without rotating or moving up and down.

Therefore, according to this embodiment, the cushion member 20
is held integrally with the case 4, vibration of the cushion member 20 itself is prevented and impact on the monolith catalyst 6 is alleviated, thereby effectively preventing damage to the monolith catalyst 6, cutting of the cushion member 20, etc. play.

Furthermore, the protector 14 and cushion member 20 that are fixed together by spot welding have the effect that the welded portion has excellent heat resistance.

According to the spot welding in the above embodiment, the cushion member 20 caves in as shown in FIG. 4a due to the pressure bonding of the electrodes and the generated heat, causing unevenness on the catalyst surface relative to the monolithic catalyst 6, making it easier for exhaust gas to pass through. There are cases.

In this case, as shown in FIG. 4b, if a protrusion 30 protruding toward the cushion member is formed on the protector 14 and welded by projection welding, the contact surface of the cushion member 20 with respect to the monolithic catalyst 6 is formed. A flat contact surface can be obtained without creating any unevenness.
