The present invention relates to a card having a built-in memory for storing identification data such as a password and a CPU as a data processing device, that is, a so-called IC card. This invention relates to an IC card system for providing security functions.

M) 3, and can exchange data with the system control unit 5 via the IC card reader/writer 4. The ROM 3 of this IC card 1 stores a personal identification number (PIN) unique to the owner, and when the card is used, the PIN entered from the PIN input section 6 through the system control section 5 is sent to the CPU 2. Data could be read and written only after checking and confirming that the card was used legitimately.

There was a risk that the card could be made to respond and the data could be read or rewritten. In order to prevent such unauthorized use, measures on the part of the system control department may be considered, but hand-made ICs made for the purpose of unauthorized use may be considered.
If you use a card reader/writer, you can learn your password by repeating the verification operation, so the card on the system side is meaningless. On the other hand, if an incorrect PIN is entered several times, the card is invalidated and cannot be used again, as is the case with magnetic cards.
The problem is that it is too uneconomical considering the cost of the card.

First, the CPU 16 compares the number input from the PIN input unit 12 with the PIN stored in the ROM (t-B), and if they match, resets the number of incorrect inputs of the PIN to zero (1). −
2, 1-3) Responds to the system control unit 13 and starts predetermined processing. On the other hand, the entered number and ROM15
If the PIN numbers stored in the PIN numbers do not match, the PIN error counter is counted to count the number of incorrect PIN inputs (1-4), and the number of erroneous inputs (i) is set to a predetermined value (n). 1-s)
, when the number of incorrect inputs (i) is less than a predetermined value (n), re-entry of the PIN is permitted, and when the number of incorrect inputs (i) is less than the predetermined value (n),
When n) is reached, responses to the system control unit 15 are prohibited (1-6.1-7), and this response prohibited state continues until a predetermined recovery process for the IC card 11 is performed. This makes it impossible to use the IC card 11 illegally, and in the case of an erroneous operation by the owner, the IC card can be made usable again through early recovery processing.

A predetermined matching process as shown in the figure is performed (2-4,
2-5), and if the input PIN numbers match, the customer inputs the withdrawal amount (2-6), and the withdrawal process is performed by exchanging data between the system control unit 13 and the IC card 11 (2-6). 7) is completed before the card is returned (
2-8). On the other hand, if the entered PIN does not match, enter the PIN again as long as there is a response from the IC card 11 (2-5 → 2-3), and if the PIN is entered incorrectly a predetermined number of times. The IC card 11 becomes unresponsive, the card is collected (2-9), and the process ends. In this case, predetermined measures such as recovery processing are performed on one collected IC card 11.
