Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid the interruption of communications due to the shortage of memory by deciding the size of capacity received from a receiver and that of transmitted image information. CONSTITUTION:When a transmission side dials to a reception side, the reception side receives a ringing signal R1, automatically responds to it, and transmits a nonstandard device signal NSF and a digital identification signal DIS following a callee station identification signal CED to the transmission side. The nonstandard device signal NSF is an option signal for identifying a specific user's request. With the aid of said signal, the capacity that the receiver can receive image information, that is, the capacity that a memory can store image information, is reported. Accordingly the transmission side can know the capacity that the receiver can receive image information, deciding the nonstandard device signal NSF, and compares it with the capacity of transmitted image information. If the latter is smaller, a nonstandard device setting signal NSS is transmitted. Prior to the actual transmission of image information, the receiver can previously know the capacity of received image information, whereby it can secure the memory corresponding to the capacity of image information.

Conventionally, in the facsimile communication system that communicates image information between the woodcutter's memories, the transmitter does not know how much free space is available in the receiver's memory to store image information, and the receiver cannot communicate the image information received from the transmitter. Since the capacity of the receiver is not known, if the image information is communicated as is, the capacity of the image information to be transmitted may be larger than the storage capacity of the memory of the receiver.

In the conventional method described above, even if the amount of image information to be transmitted is larger than the storage capacity of the receiver's memory, the transmitter does not know how much free space is available in the receiver's memory to store the image information. In addition, since the receiver does not know in advance the amount of image information it will receive, it does not know the amount of memory it should reserve for reception, so it may receive image information without allocating sufficient memory. There was a drawback that memory shortage occurred in the receiver during communication of image information, and communication was interrupted.

As explained above, in the present invention, since the receiver knows in advance the capacity of the image information to be received before actually communicating the image information C, it is possible to secure memory corresponding to the capacity of the image information, and the transmitter can receive the image information. Since the receivable capacity of the device is known in advance, by comparing the capacity and size of the image information to be transmitted, it is possible to avoid interruptions in communication due to insufficient memory on the receiving device during image information communication.
