Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit the reproduction and viewing of a bright stereoscopic video of good contrast by constituting the 1st and 2nd shutter elements in such a manner that the open and shut conditions thereof are reversed from the open and shut conditions of the same driving signals and providing the shutters laminated with such 1st and 2nd shutter elements on the right and left. CONSTITUTION:The shutter element 8 (9) is constituted by sticking polarizing plates 4, 5 (6, 7) in the relation of parallel Nicols to both faces of the liquid crystal element 2 (3). The shutter element 8 transmits (shuts off) light L1, namely, attains the open (shut) state, when a voltage is impressed to the liquid crystal element 2. The shutter element shuts off (transmits) the light L1, namely, attains the shut (open) state in an opposite case. The shutter elements 8, 9 are laminated on the surfaces of the polarizing plates 5, 6 to constitute a shutter 1. The shutter 1 constituted in such a manner is provided as the shutter 1 on, for example, the left side of spectacles and the equiv. shutter is mounted as the shutter 1' on the right side of the spectacles, by which the liquid crystal spectacles 10 for stereoscopic video are constituted.

In the glasses used in this type of 3D television, for example, only the left shutter of the glasses is opened when the image of the field for the left eye is being played, and then the shutter on the left side of the glasses is opened when the image of the field for the right eye is being played. Only the right shutter opens, and such glasses can be realized by applying liquid crystal elements, piezoelectric elements, etc.

FIG. 5 is a time chart for explaining the operation of the shutter 20. FIG. 5(A) is a waveform diagram of the drive signal applied to the liquid crystal element 21, and FIG.
It is a waveform diagram of rr1 characteristic. As is clear from FIG. 5, it takes time for the shutter 20 to open and close in response to the rise and fall of the drive signal. In particular, when the drive signal falls (the voltage becomes zero), the time it takes for the shutter 20 to change from the open state to the closed state is long, sometimes taking 10 m5ec or more.

[Means for Solving the Problems] In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the present invention provides liquid crystal glasses for stereoscopic images by providing polarizing plates on both sides of each of a pair of liquid crystal elements, and driving the liquid crystal elements to the liquid crystal glasses. The first and second shutter elements have a shutter function by applying a signal, and the opening and closing states of the shutter function of the first and second shutter elements are reversed in response to the same drive signal. A method for driving liquid crystal glasses for stereoscopic images constructed as above is described, and a shutter in which the first and second shutter elements are laminated is provided on the left and right sides. The drive signal to be driven is such that the voltage application time in the drive signal is π/2i1i and is shortened by a predetermined value with respect to the drive signal for the first shutter element. .

In the figure, reference numeral 11 denotes an input terminal to which a field-sequential stereoscopic television signal is supplied from, for example, a video disc. In this type of stereoscopic television signal, left and right images are sequentially switched and transmitted according to even or odd fields that make up a frame image. The television signal is processed using, for example, the NTSCm standard system.

Next, a method for driving the stereoscopic liquid crystal glasses 10 will be explained with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3. The three-dimensional television signal input to the input terminal 11 is reproduced as an image by the monitor preview receiver l1112, and at the same time, the synchronization signal separation circuit 13 extracts the vertical synchronization signal and horizontal synchronization signal, and the next field identification circuit 14 extracts the vertical synchronization signal and horizontal synchronization signal. By comparing the phases of the vertical synchronization signal and the horizontal synchronization signal, it determines whether the field at that time is even or odd, and outputs a signal as, for example, a square wave H in an odd field and an L of the same square wave in an even field. This switching of the day and year is performed every 1/60 second in NTSC television, for example.

The opening/closing state of the shutter element 8 is controlled in accordance with the period T1 of the drive signal a, and the opening/closing characteristics at this time are shown in FIG.

Next, as described above, the shutter element 9 is in the closed state when a voltage is applied by the drive signal S, and is in the open state when the applied voltage is zero. At this time, the voltage application time of the drive signal a is delayed by π/2 and is shorter by a predetermined time T than the drive signal a.

Therefore, the opening/closing characteristic e of the shutter 1 is given by the opening/closing characteristic C1d.
If either shutter element 8 or 9 is in the closed state, the shutter 1 is in the closed state, so the opening/closing characteristics are as shown in Fig. 2 (E).
The characteristic is shown in the figure e. As is clear from the m-characteristic e in the figure, the saturation time from the state to the state (2), that is, the falling time is short. Furthermore, since the shutter element constituting the shutter 1 has two layers, the contrast is improved, and if only the contrast is considered, it is better to have three or more layers.
