Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical attenuator simplified at its structure by providing the optical attenuator with two rod lenses having (n+1/4)lambda length, a liquid crystal film and a liquid crystal film control circuit for controlling liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:Light from an input optical fiber cable 1 is expanded at its light flux by the rod lens 2 and only necessary light is controlled and transmitted through the liquid crystal film 3 and made incident upon the rod lens 4. The transmitted light is converted by the rod lens 4 and outputted through an optical fiber cable 5. The liquid crystal 3' in the liquid crystal film 3 is controlled by the liquid crystal film control circuit 6 in each segment and transmitted light through the liquid crystal 3' is discretely (digitally) attenuated. At the time of atenuation, a half of the liquid crystal 3' in the liquid crystal film 3 is made opaque by the circuit 6 as shown in a figure, the input light from the cable 1 is attenuated less than a half of it and the quantity of output light is reduced less than a half of the input light.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [Industrial Application Field] The present invention relates to an optical attenuator, particularly an optical attenuator VCR that can discretely and precisely control the attenuation of light. A [Conventional technology] Conventional optical attenuators use a method to attenuate light in a fixed manner using a metal film, a method to attenuate the light in stages by mechanically blocking the light, and a method to attenuate the light in stages by applying a voltage. This was achieved by continuously attenuating the light using an element that can deflect the artificial light.

The light beam enters from an input fiber cable 1 and is expanded by a Harrod lens 2. The expanded light flux passes through the liquid crystal film 3 and enters the rod lens 41C, but at this time it is controlled by the liquid crystal film 3 and only the necessary components are transmitted. Light transmitted through the liquid crystal film 3 and collected by the rod lens 4 is outputted through the optical fiber cable 5. The liquid crystal 3' of the liquid crystal film 3 is controlled segment by segment by a liquid crystal film control circuit 6Vc, so that the transmitted light passing through the liquid crystal 3' can be discretely (digitally) attenuated.
