Description

[Detailed description of the invention] (Field of invention) The present invention relates to a hair curler.

OBJECTS AND EFFECTS OF THE INVENTION Hair curlers adapted to pass steam prior to application to the hair are well known. The present invention aims to solve several problems with known hair curlers, so that the number of parts is reduced, the parts are more flexible, and they are easier to deform to partially adapt to the shape of the head. , the manufacturing cost of the hair curler is reduced, and other effects are achieved.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In one embodiment, the invention includes a first coreless shaft comprised of a flexible foamed polymeric material that is closed at one end. A second, more rigid IJ-b is wrapped around the first sleeve. The second sleeve is provided with spaced longitudinal slots on the sides to make the central portion of the second sleeve more flexible. The other end of the first sleeve is open to receive steam.

The hair curler preferably has the following additional features. Teeth are provided along the periphery of the slot in the second sleeve so that the slot can capture the hair and hold the hair curler in place. A shield may be provided for removable attachment to the ends of the hair curler. The sleeve may include a removable core so that the first and second sleeves can be used with or without a window.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a hair curler 10 according to the present invention. As shown more clearly in FIG. 2, the hair curler 10 includes an elongated core 1 which may be made from a thermally conductive metal such as aluminum or from a polymeric plastic material.

Sleeve 24 is preferably made of a foamed polymeric plastic material, has a radial thickness substantially equal to or greater than the radial thickness of core 12, and has a length that matches the length of core 12. Sleeve 24 is wrapped around second sleeve 26 with a loose interference fit therebetween. Sleeve 26 is preferably made of a liquid-impermeable polymeric material and is shorter than sleeve 24. Therefore, the sleeve 26 does not touch the human ear.

However, sleeve 26 may have the same length as sleeve 24.

The thickness of sleeve 26 is substantially less than sleeve 24. Sleeve 26 has a plurality of holes or longitudinally extending slots 28 in its center.

The slot 2 makes the central portion of the sleeve 26 very flexible so that the sleeve 26 can be easily deformed with minimal finger force to facilitate hair wrapping. The lateral edges of the slot 28 are preferably provided with a plurality of arcuately arranged fingers or teeth 30, which are adapted to capture the ends of the hair curlers being wound around the hair. FIG. 7 illustrates a cross-sectional view of another embodiment of the invention, in which the hair curler is indicated generally at 50. Hair curler 50 is the same as hair curler z)-10 except as described below. Hair curler 50 is coreless and includes a first flexible foam sleeve 52 that corresponds to sleeve 24 and is wrapped by a sleeve 54 that corresponds to sleeve 26 . Shield 56 corresponds to shield 62 and is attached to the end of sleeve 52 by an end tab as described above. One end of sleeve 52 is closed by any conventional method. A simple and inexpensive way to close one end of the sleeve 52 is to fit an end cap 561 having a short boss 58 onto the sleeve 52 as shown at the left end in FIG. Alternatively, the lid 56' may be shaped like a pot and fit around the outer periphery of one end of the sleeve 52. If desired, the open end of the sleeve 52 can be provided with a removable end cap 60 having a hole 62 coaxial with the inner surface of the sleeve 52. Curler 50 is used in the same manner as described above.

Hair curler 50 is lighter and cheaper to manufacture than hair curler 10. Additionally, the corelessness makes the hair curler 10 more flexible and comfortable. The weight of hair curler 10 without the shield would be approximately 15 grams, whereas the weight of hair curler 50 without the shield would be 7 to 8 grams.

Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 8, in which the hair curler is indicated generally at 70. Hair curler 70 is the same as hair curler 10 except for the following points. Sleeve 72 fits over sleeve 26 and has a length corresponding to the length of sleeve 26. Sleeve 72 is preferably a layer of foamed polymeric plastic material that corresponds to the material of sleeve 24.
