Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a coated hard alloy suitable for intermittent cutting and continuous cutting by successively forming a layer of the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of Ti, V, Cr or Zr and a layer of one or more among the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of Ti and Al2O3 on the surface of a hard material. CONSTITUTION:A layer of the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of a metal such as Ti, Cr, V or Zr is formed on the surface of a hard material such as a sintered hard alloy or cermet contg. WC or TaC as the principal component by a PVD method to 0.10-6.0mum thickness, and then a layer of one or more among the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of Ti and Al2O3 is formed by a CVD method. The total thickness of the layers is regulated to 0.50-12.0mum. A coated hard alloy having superior wear and chipping resistances and suitable for both intermittent cutting and continuous cutting is obtd.

(1) A layer made of carbide, nitride, or carbonitride of titanium, chromium, vanadium, or zirconium is applied to the surface of a hard material made of cemented carbide or cermet, with a layer thickness of 0.10 to 6.0μ. One or more types of titanium are formed by physical vapor deposition, and one or more of titanium carbide, nitride, carbonitride, and aluminum oxide are further formed on the surface of the layer by chemical vapor deposition. A coated hard alloy characterized in that the total thickness of the layer is 0.05 to 12.0μ.
