This forms an acidic unit, which acts as a catalyst and promotes the elimination reaction, and the eliminated maleic acid easily releases water and becomes neutral maleic anhydride again.

It can be easily produced by simply heating and refluxing. Further, the method of the present invention can produce a deoxypodophyllotoxin intermediate as a raw material for stereoselectively synthesizing (+)-deoxypodophyllotoxin and its analogous compounds, which are useful as anticancer agents.
