PURPOSE:To prevent easy duplication of a magnetic tape with a commercially available recording and reproducing device such as tape recorder by obliquely arranging the gap direction of a head which records and reproduces signals on and from a magnetic recording medium in the running direction of the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:When a tape, on which recording is made by using a recording and reproducing head 5 whose gap is inclined by an angle theta, is reproduced with an ordinary reproducing device, the frequency component at the high band of signals is damped and the data recorded on the magnetic tape cannot be fetched properly, since the direction of the head gap does not coincide. Moreover, when the tape is duplicated with an ordinary sound recording and reproducing device, the data recorded on the tape cannot be reproduced properly, since the data are recorded with the high band of the original signals being largely dampled. When a magnetic tape thus duplicated is reproduced by means of the device shown in the figure, the high band is further damped and the data cannot by reproduced properly, since the head gap direction is further deviated.
