The present invention relates to a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water. Specifically, a method for producing alkylene glycol in which an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms is reacted with water in the presence of carbon dioxide using molybdenum metal and/or a molybdenum compound as a catalyst to increase the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol. Regarding. Alkylene glycol is used in a wide range of applications as a raw material for polyester, urethane, antifreeze, surfactants, etc. Conventionally, the method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting alkylene oxide with water is a method using a catalyst such as sulfuric acid (U.S. Pat. No. 2,255,411).
No. 1) and methods conducted under high temperature and high pressure without using catalysts have been adopted on an industrial scale. These methods have the disadvantage that, in addition to monoalkylene glycol, large amounts of dialkylene glycol, trialkylene glycol, tetraalkylene glycol, and polyalkylene glycol are unavoidably produced as by-products. In addition, since the production ratio of alkylene glycol obtained by the reaction between alkylene oxide and water is determined by the molar ratio of water to alkylene oxide, in order to increase the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol in the composition of alkylene glycol, The molar ratio of water to alkylene oxide must be high. Generally, using a large excess of water of 10 to 20 times the mole relative to the alkylene oxide, in the presence or absence of a catalyst, the pressure is 5 to 25%.
A method has been adopted in which the raw material alkylene oxide is converted into alkylene glycol at a temperature of 100 to 200 ° C. and the reaction is completed. However, the product obtained by reacting water in large excess with respect to alkylene oxide is a dilute aqueous alkylene glycol solution of about 5 to 30% by weight. In order to separate and purify alkylene glycol from this dilute aqueous alkylene glycol solution, it is necessary to remove a large excess of water, which has the drawback of requiring complicated equipment such as an evaporator and a large amount of energy. Recently, in a method for producing alkylene glycol from alkylene oxide and water, the amount of water relative to the raw material alkylene oxide is reduced to 1 stoichiometric amount.
Several methods have been proposed in which the reaction is carried out by reducing the amount to about 2.5 times the molar amount and increasing the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol. For example, in Japanese Patent Publication No. 49-24448, alkylene oxide is converted into water using an alkali metal halide or quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst in the presence of carbon dioxide at a pressure of 10 to 80 atm and a temperature of 80 to 220°C. Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 127010/1983 describes a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting the corresponding alkylene oxide with water and carbon dioxide in an organic base such as triethylamine-pyridine, and Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 1983-127010 describes a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting the corresponding alkylene oxide with water and carbon dioxide in an organic base such as triethylamine-pyridine. No. 4 in the specification of No. 19905
A method has been revealed in which alkylene oxide is hydrated in the presence of carbon dioxide using a class phosphonium salt as a catalyst. However, these methods still have problems to be improved, such as insufficient effectiveness, corrosion of the equipment caused by the catalyst used, and problems with the quality of the ethylene glycol product. The present inventors have overcome the drawbacks of conventional methods and have developed a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water. As a result of research on a simple and economical method for producing monoalkylene glycol with high selectivity without producing glycol, we found that it uses molybdenum metal and/or a molybdenum compound as a catalyst in the presence of carbon dioxide, and has a carbon atom number of 3. By reacting the above alkylene oxide and water, the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms can be completely converted into alkylene glycol, and the proportion of monoalkylene glycol in the generated alkylene glycol composition can be increased;
The present invention was completed by discovering that the amount of water relative to the raw material alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms can be reduced to a stoichiometric amount of about 1 to 5 times the mole. One of the objects of the present invention is a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water,
In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing alkylene glycol in which the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol is increased. Another purpose is to adjust the amount of water to be reacted with an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms from 1 to
The purpose is to reduce the amount to a stoichiometric amount of about 5 times the mole, thereby reducing utility costs in the step of separating and purifying alkylene glycol after completion of the reaction. The present invention is a method for producing alkylene glycol, which is characterized by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water in the presence of carbon dioxide, using molybdenum metal and/or a molybdenum compound as a catalyst. In the present invention, carbon dioxide has 3 carbon atoms.
It is essential that alkylene oxide and water coexist in the reaction described above. In particular, the coexistence of carbon dioxide exhibits a remarkable effect when the amount of water relative to the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms is reduced to a stoichiometric amount of 1 or less or 1 to 5 times the mole. Carbon dioxide is used under the conditions of the present invention for alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms as a raw material.
It is used in a range of 0.00001 to 1 mol, preferably 0.0001 to 1 mol. Carbon dioxide is usually added in gaseous form, but it can also be a compound that releases carbon dioxide under the reaction conditions, such as alkali metal carbonates or bicarbonates, in particular sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, Even if it is added in the form of potassium carbonate, potassium hydrogen carbonate, etc., the purpose of the present invention will not be impaired in any way. The molybdenum metal used as a catalyst in the present invention is preferably a molybdenum metal with a high surface area, and can be used in the form of powder, sand, granules, wire mesh, honeycomb, or sponge in the liquid phase. , used as a suspended or fixed bed,
Further, the material of the reactor may contain molybdenum metal. Among these, an appropriate one may be selected based on the strength of reaction activity, ease of handling, price, etc., and those that can be finely dispersed within the reaction system are particularly desirable. In addition, as a molybdenum compound as a catalyst,
inorganic and organic compounds such as oxides, sulfides,
Examples include acids, halides, phosphorus compounds, polyacids, alkali metal salts of acids or polyacids, alkaline earth metal salts of acids or polyacids, ammonium salts of acids or polyacids, heavy metal salts of acids, and the like. Specifically, molybdenum dioxide, molybdenum trioxide, molybdenum disulfide, molybdic acid, molybdenum trichloride, molybdenum pentachloride, molybdenum tribromide, phosphomolybdic acid, sodium molybdate, sodium paramolybdate, potassium molybdate, and paramolybdenum. Potassium acid, lithium molybdate, calcium molybdate, barium molybdate, ammonium molybdate, ammonium paramolybdate, iron molybdate, lead molybdate, and the like are each effectively used. Furthermore, molybdenum metal and molybdenum compounds can be used in combination. In the catalyst of the present invention, particularly preferred are alkali metal salts of molybdic acid such as sodium molybdate and potassium molybdate. These catalysts can be used as they are, in the form of shapes, or supported on silica, alumina, zeolite, etc. by known methods and dissolved in a liquid phase, mixed, suspended, or used as a fixed bed. The addition method is to mix it with water or to provide an independent addition port. In either case, there are two methods: adding the entire amount at the beginning, and adding a constant amount continuously or intermittently during the reaction. For practical purposes, it may be selected appropriately taking into consideration the reaction format, operating method, etc. The molybdenum metal and/or molybdenum compound in the present invention is used in an amount of 0.01% by weight or more, preferably 0.1 to 100% by weight, particularly 1 to 20% by weight, based on the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms. Examples of the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms as a reaction raw material used in the present invention include propylene oxide, butylene oxide, pentylene oxide, and styrene oxide. Further, any water can be used as the reaction raw material, and in particular, fresh water, ion-exchanged water, condensed water of steam, condensed water from a dehydration process in an alkylene oxide and alkylene glycol plant, etc. can be used. The amount of water relative to the raw material alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms can be used up to about 1 to 30 times the mole, but it can especially be reduced to a stoichiometric amount of 1 to 5 times the mole, and depending on the reaction type. Although the amount may be less than that, it is generally preferable to use a slightly excess amount of 1.01 to 5 times the stoichiometric amount, preferably 1.01 to 2.5 times the mol. The reaction temperature varies depending on the type of catalyst, the composition of the reaction liquid at the beginning of the reaction, etc., but is generally carried out in the range of room temperature to 250°C, preferably 80 to 200°C. The pressure is preferably 0 to 30 kg/cm 2 G, preferably 2 to 25 kg/cm 2 G so that the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms remains in a liquid phase. Of course, there is no particular problem in adjusting the pressure within the reactor as necessary. The reaction format in the present invention may be a batch type, a semi-batch type or a continuous type. The method of the present invention will be specifically explained below with reference to Examples, but these are merely illustrative examples, and it goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to these examples in any way. Of course, various implementations can be made within the scope of. Here, the conversion rate of alkylene oxide, the selectivity of monoalkylene glycol, dialkylene glycol, trialkylene glycol, etc. are derived from the following formula. Conversion rate of alkylene oxide (%) = Number of moles of alkylene oxide before reaction - Number of moles of alkylene oxide after reaction / Number of moles of alkylene oxide before reaction × 100 Selectivity of monoalkylene glycol (%) = Number of moles of alkylene oxide produced Number of moles/Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide x 100 Selectivity of dialkylene glycol (%) = Number of moles of dialkylene glycol produced x 2/Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide x 100 Selectivity of trialkylene glycol (%) ) = Number of moles of trialkylene glycol produced × 3 / Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide × 100 Example 1 2.0 g of potassium molybdate, 21.6 g of water, and 34.8 g of propylene oxide were placed in a 200 ml stainless steel autoclave equipped with a stirrer. Carbon dioxide gas was injected from a cylinder until it reached 1.7 kg/cm 2 G. Next, the total pressure was made 6Kg/cm 2 G with nitrogen gas, and the temperature was 140℃.
The mixture was immersed in an oil bath maintained at a constant temperature for 120 minutes. The pressure reached 14.2 Kg/cm 2 G after 48 minutes, decreased to 7.9 Kg/cm 2 G after 80 minutes, and remained almost unchanged thereafter. After cooling the autoclave in an ice bath, the reaction product liquid was analyzed, and unreacted propylene oxide was found to be
At 0.01% by weight or less, the conversion rate of propylene oxide was essentially 100%. The selectivities of monopropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, etc. relative to the raw material propylene oxide were 90.6%, 8.8%, and 0.6%, respectively. Example 2 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that sodium molybdate was used as the catalyst. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 3 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of catalyst added was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Examples 4 to 5 In Example 1, the reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of carbon dioxide present was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Examples 6 to 7 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of water as a reaction raw material was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 8 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that 1.7 g of molybdic acid was used as the catalyst and potassium hydrogen carbonate was used instead of carbon dioxide gas. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 9 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the reaction raw material was 43.3 g of 1,2-butylene oxide and the reaction time was 240 minutes. The result is second
As shown in the table, the conversion rate of 1,2-butylene oxide was virtually 100%, and the selectivity to monobutylene glycol was 93.7%. Comparative Example 1 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no catalyst was added and the reaction time was 240 minutes. The results were as shown in Table 1. Comparative Example 2 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no carbon dioxide gas was added and the total pressure was set to 6 kg/cm 2 G using only nitrogen gas. The results were as shown in Table 1.
