Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate recording operation from a host computer by erasing a recording area when a recording instruction is received and then recording data by a device which records and reproduces information by irradiating a rewritable recording medium with light. CONSTITUTION:A recording and a reproduction instruction for an optical disk 11 on a device 24 are inputted from the host computer 4 as an external device. When the recording instruction is received, a controller 12 inputs an address where information is recorded from the host and accesses an area on the disk corresponding to the address with a light beam to start erasing the area. For the erasure, a recording/reproducing head part 16 accesses the position of the start address where information to be erased is recorded and then a bias magnet driving circuit 22 sets the bias of a bias magnet 21 to an erasure bias to irradiate the area with light from a laser 16a to the erasure quantity of light in said state. The recording start position is accessed with the light beam after the erasure to record recording data. A phase transition type disk is the same and the recording operation is facilitated.

Conventionally, magnetic disk devices using magnetism have been widely used as information recording/reproducing devices using replaceable recording media. In Fm disc devices, in order to rewrite an area where information has already been recorded, if further recording is performed in that area, the previously recorded information will be erased and only the newly recorded information will remain. For this reason, there was no need to perform any particular erasing operation. However, in recent years, as opportunities to handle large amounts of data such as image information have increased, magneto-optical disks and phase change disks have been considered as rewritable recording media with larger recording capacities. In these recording media, in order to record information, the device is configured such that new information is recorded in an area where information has been erased. For this reason, information recording and reproducing devices that use this type of media are required to perform ``erase'' and ``erase'' operations in addition to ``record'' and ``replay,'' which were used with magnetic disks, as commands from the host computer connected to the device. ” command had to be added, and it was not compatible with conventional magnetic disks as is.

The recording/reproducing head section 16 is composed of an objective lens 16b, a half mirror 16c, and an analyzer 16d. 17 is a reproduction signal demodulation circuit for reproducing a signal from the reflected light from the magneto-optical disk device IT; 18 is a focus/tracking control circuit which drives the objective lens 16b to perform focus, VJ if, and tracking control; The head motor is driven by a head motor drive circuit 20 in response to a head drive command from a controller 12 . Reference numeral 21 denotes a via magnet, which is driven by a bias magnetic drive circuit 22. 23 is an interface circuit that sends reproduction information to the external device 4. Note that a tracking guide groove and an address signal that cannot be erased are recorded in advance on the magneto-optical disk device 111h. Note that the part surrounded by the broken line 24 is compatible with a combination of a conventional magnetic disk device controller and a magnetic disk drive device.

Next, the operation will be explained. If the magneto-optical disk unit 211 is waiting for a recording, playback, or erase mode instruction while it is rotating, it receives an instruction from the controller 12 and
A laser modulation circuit 15 modulates the beam intensity of the laser 16a to cause it to emit light at the optical output during reproduction. The beam at this time is focused on the magneto-optical disk unit 911 by the objective lens 16b, and the reflected light from the magneto-optical disk unit all is reflected by the half mirror 16c and enters the analyzer 16d.
The signal from the analyzer 16d is input to the focus/tracking control circuit 18, which drives the objective lens 16b to perform focus control and tracking control. The signal from the analyzer 16d is also input to the reproduced signal demodulation circuit 17. The address of the current recording/reproducing head unit 16 is reproduced.

During recording, the head motor is driven to drive the recording/reproducing head unit 16 to an address instructed by the external device W4 or the controller 12 near the target address based on the difference obtained by comparing the target address and the standby address. Circuit 20 drives Herad motor 19 . Then, the beam position is finely adjusted by driving the objective lens 16b to the final address position. Thereafter, the laser modulation circuit 15 modulates the amount of recording light of the laser 16a according to the instructed information to form a recording pattern. At this time, the bias magnetic drive circuit 22 sets the bias of the bias magnet 21 to the recording bias in response to a command from the controller 12.

During reproduction, after the recording/reproducing head section 16 accesses the position of the start address where desired information is recorded, the reflected light from the magneto-optical disk device 11 is guided through the analyzer 16d, and the reproduced signal demodulation circuit 17 demodulates the signal and sends a reproduced signal from the interface circuit 23 to the external device 4. At this time, the bias magnetic drive circuit 22 sets the bias JIEi 21 (7) to zero.

It is managed by addresses for each sector area. Also,
Management information for identifying information recorded on the disk in the magneto-optical disk device 11! b is recorded in a predetermined area on the magneto-optical disk device 11. The original information is recorded sequentially from the outer circumferential direction to the inner circumferential direction of the magneto-optical disk, and the original information is recorded sector by sector over a plurality of sectors. On the other hand, management information is recorded from the inner circumferential direction to the outer circumferential direction, and is recorded in units of sectors.

FIG. 4 shows a control flow diagram of the controller 12 of the magneto-optical disk device. When the device 24 is powered on, control starts (step 31), and each register is initialized (step 32). Next, the routine enters a routine that waits for a command input from the host computer 4, which is an external device (step 33). When a command is input, it is determined whether it is playback, recording, erasure, or the status of the disk device (execution status, error, etc.). ) is determined to be a command for monitoring (steps 34 to 37), and if none of the above applies, a message indicating that there is an error in the command is returned to the host (
