Two support shafts are provided close to the circumferential surface of the photoreceptor drum and positioned in the circumferential direction, and an endless separation belt is stretched around the support shafts, and both support shafts are close to the circumferential surface of the photoreceptor drum. By applying a force in a direction opposite to the drum surface to the intermediate portion of both support shafts of the separation belt stretched on the side, tension is applied to the separation belt, so that the separation belt is stretched on the side closer to the circumferential surface of the photoreceptor drum. The separated separation belt is separated from the circumferential surface of the photoreceptor drum, while the middle part of both support shafts of the separation belt stretched on the far side from the circumference of the photoreceptor drum is controlled in accordance with a signal to separate the separation belt from the circumference of the photoreceptor drum. The tension applied to the separating belt by the mechanism is greater than the tension constantly applied to the belt, and the tension applied to the belt by the operation of the mechanism causes the photoreceptor drum to be connected to a mechanism that operates in a direction opposite to the surface.
