Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a thin metallic plate having a good surface characteristic with a titled device which has a pair of water-cooled casting rolls in a molten metal bath by providing heated refractory material near the part where the surface of the molten metal and said rolls contact. CONSTITUTION:A molten steel 10 is supplied into a tundish 1 and is continuously poured via pouring nozzle 2 into a molten metal dam 4 by a specified amt. The molten steel is reserved in the part enclosed of casting rolls 3, 3' and the dam 4. The molten steel 11 contacts the surfaces of the rolls 3, 3', by which the molten steel is cooled and solidified shells 12, 12' are formed. The sheels move downward according to revolutions 16, 16' of rolls, by which a sheet of a thin plate 13 is manufacture. Heated refractory materials 6, 6' contg. heating elements such as nichrome wires or the like are installed near the part where the surface of the steel 11 and the rolls 3, 3' contact so that the shells 12, 12' start solidification from below the surface of the molten steel 11. The surface of the plate 13 is thus kept free from the influence by the waving on the surface of the molten steel and the surface characteristic of the plate 13 is improved.

[Conventional thin plate continuous casting method and its drawbacks] Molten metal is supplied between a pair of water-cooled casting rolls that face each other and are driven and rotated synchronously in opposite directions, and the molten metal comes into contact with the surface of the water-cooled casting rolls. It has been known to continuously cast thin metal sheets by cooling them to form solidified shells. However, the surface texture of the metal sheet cast by this conventional method has a drawback that it has large irregularities and remains as scratches even after rolling.

The present inventors discovered that since the surface quality of a thin metal sheet is strongly influenced by the surface of the molten metal, by starting solidification from a little below the surface of the molten metal, the influence of the surface can be avoided and the surface quality can be improved. They discovered that a thin metal plate could be obtained and completed the present invention. Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a thin sheet continuous casting apparatus in which thin metal sheets have good surface properties. More specifically, it is an object of the present invention to provide a continuous thin plate casting apparatus in which solidification of molten metal starts from slightly below the surface.

As described in detail above, the present invention has a heated refractory material disposed near the contact surface between the surface of the molten metal in the molten metal bath and the water-cooled casting roll, so that the molten metal bath is heated by the heated refractory material. The starting point of the solidified shell of the water-cooled casting roll is below the surface of the molten metal, and is not affected by the undulations on the surface of the molten steel 110. As a result, the unevenness of the metal thin plate can be reduced and a metal thin plate with good surface properties can be obtained. In addition, by obtaining a smooth metal sheet surface, surface cracking can be prevented, and furthermore, since the solidification length can be made constant, stable operation can be achieved, which is a remarkable effect.
