Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a blind person to print ordinary characters with use of a personal computer and a printer by pushing keys on a keyboard in the same finger arrangement as a braille typewriter and using ''ON'' (phonetic reading of Chinese characters) and ''KUN'' (Japanese pronunciation) to select KANJI (Chinese character). CONSTITUTION:A blind person uses a general-purpose personal computer to print a sentence of ordinary characters through a printer and just with the knowledge of the braille. In such a case, six fingers are first put on keys 1-7 on a keyboard in the same arrangement as a braille typewriter. In other words, the 3rd and 2nd fingers of the left hand are put on keys 1 and 2 in order with the 3rd finger of the right hand put on the key 7. In this case, however, no finger is usually put on the key 4 and a KANJI output routine is branched when the key 4 is pushed. Then these keys are pushed in the same way as the braille typewriter. Thus the results are delivered by a digital speech synthesizer in sounds through a speaker. In other words, a KANJI routine jump can be decided by an AND of variables of about two characters with ''ON'' and about three characters with ''KUN'' after a push of the key 4 in a KANJI output mode. Thus a blind person can print ordinary characters by means of a printer.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Word processing devices for the blind include minicomputers and large calculators. These are inconvenient because they use Kanji Braille, which represents the irregularities of Kanji characters in Braille. However, this program is an invention that can be easily used by the general public because it allows a wide variety of characters to be expressed on a general-purpose personal computer with only knowledge of Braille, and it can also be confirmed by voice.

In Braille, the character "me" in ordinary characters is produced by pressing six fingers, so the binary data of 00010001 is entered in the data bus, which becomes 17 in decimal, and then I F THEN.
Output to the CRT using Put (X, Y), (&H2461), then output as audio from the speakers using LPRint ``ME'' and a conventional digital speech synthesizer. This synthesizer can be connected to the printer output terminal of the computer using a parallel cable with the printer. The connection is made, and after the processing, X is increased by +20 and the process returns to the beginning.A series of flowcharts of these steps are shown in FIG.

The kanji routine branched to -■ in FIG. 2 goes to the stone that performs the kanji determination process shown in FIG. The selection of kanji is determined by ANDing a total of five variables, about two characters for on-yomi and three for kun-yomi. The sound and precept vary depending on the character, so press l to determine the appropriate part.
