Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a magnetic head from wearing away and to stabilize the running of a magnetic tape by using glassy carbon for a tape guide and allowing the tape guides from contacting the edge, magnetic layer, or base of the magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION:Glassy carbon has such properties that wear resistance is high and no carbon powder is produced even by a slide. The tape guides 11 using this has a notch part and surfaces 12 and 13 that the tape 7 contacts are formed. Consequently, a magnetic layer comes into surface contact with the extension part 13a of the tape guide in front of and behind where the tape 7 slided on a magnetic core, and tape edges come into point contact with parts 12, so a tracking adjustment is made securely. In this case, there is no space between the tape 7 and tape guides 11, or sliding surface of a magnetic head, so there is no clearance and the tape 7 hardly shifts in position even in case of irregularity of a run and oscillations.

Conventionally, this type of magnetic head is shown in FIGS. 1(a) and (b>
As shown in the figure, a magnetic core 6 (

This tape guide 1.1' is provided at least on the tape entry side, the tape delivery side, or both, and its purpose is to accurately track and slide the magnetic core 6 and the magnetic tape 7 (FIG. 2). . This tape guide 1 basically has a U-shaped notch as shown in FIG.
Tracking adjustment is performed by point contact on part 2 of . When the same magnetic tape is used continuously for a long time, the magnetic tape may meander as shown in FIG. 3, for example, due to slight irregularities or vibrations in the running system of the equipment. At this time, as described above, the contact between the tape guide 1 of the magnetic head and the end of the tape 7 becomes uneven, and the end of the magnetic tape gradually deforms into a wave-like shape.

This makes the sliding movement between the magnetic core 6 and the magnetic tape 7 unstable, increasing noise due to uneven wear and spacing loss.
Crosstalk, fluctuations in playback output, tape squeal, etc. due to tracking and azimuth deviations occur, and these problems occur particularly frequently on channel tracks near the edges of the magnetic tape.

This is because the contact between the magnetic tape and the tape guide is a point contact, so even if it is adjusted, it is incomplete, and since the magnetic tape is thin, the force due to contact is limited to the edges, so the force is unevenly concentrated. This causes deformation.

That is, as shown in FIG. 2, the magnetic tape guide 1 has a cutout portion 3 that is connected to the shoulder 5 of the shield case 4 of the magnetic head.
(see Figure 1), or the magnetic tape I slides in contact with the magnetic core 6, but is otherwise positioned only by contact with the part 2 of the tape guide 1. Because it often comes into contact with the shoulder of shield case 4,
It has a structure that allows it to move very easily and easily deform while driving.

In the present invention, glassy carbon is used as the material for the tape guide 1 of the magnetic head. Glassy carbon uses a thermosetting resin with a three-dimensional mesh structure as a starting material, and sets conditions such as the type and amount of catalyst, firing temperature and time, heating rate of the charcoal, and atmosphere, and then burns the charcoal. This process takes advantage of the fact that a uniform carbon molded product with no visible cracks or openings can be obtained. The properties of such glassy carbon include electrical conductivity, high hardness, and self-lubricating properties, and it has high wear resistance and does not easily generate carbon powder even when sliding.

With this structure, before and after the magnetic tape 1 slides on the magnetic core 6, the magnetic layer is in surface contact at the extended portion 13a of the tape guide 11, and the end of the tape is in point contact at the portion 12, so that reliable tracking can be achieved. Adjustments can be made.

6 and 7 illustrate another embodiment of the present invention, in which also the tape guide 21 is made of glassy carbon and has a magnetic field as shown in FIG. Attached to the head. In this case, the tape guide 21 has a shape in which the part that contacts the side surface of the magnetic head is removed compared to the embodiment shown in FIG. Can only be installed. At this time, the shoulder portion 5 of the shield case 4 and the portion 25 of the tape guide 21 are fixed so as to be in contact with each other. In addition to the effect of the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, this configuration has the advantage that it is fixed to the sliding surface of the tape guide and magnetic head, which is useful for devices such as combination heads that are subject to spatial restrictions. effective.

FIG. 8 shows yet another embodiment of the present invention, in which the end of the tape makes surface contact with the point contact portion 32, similar to the embodiment shown in FIG. Part 33
In contrast to the embodiment of FIG. 4, the corner portions 34 and 35 of the tape guide against which the tape comes into contact are formed into arc shapes or are chamfered. This allows smooth contact with and separation from the magnetic tape, thereby preventing the tape guide from damaging the magnetic surface of the magnetic tape.

As explained above, according to the present invention, by using glassy carbon as the material of the tape guide, the hardness and self-lubricity of the tape guide itself can be improved, thereby preventing wear and deformation of the tape guide. Since it does not damage the magnetic tape, it can run stably for a long time. As a result, it is possible to significantly reduce uneven wear, crosstalk due to azimuth and tracking deviations, fluctuations in playback output, increase in noise due to spacing loss, occurrence of tape squeal, etc. that have conventionally occurred.

In addition, in the embodiment of the present invention, tracking adjustment can be performed not only by point contact but also by surface contact between the tape guide and the tape, so it is possible to prevent the magnetic tape from shifting due to vibration or running misalignment. It is also possible to prevent wavelength deformation from occurring at the end of the magnetic tape. Further, when the end of the tape guide is formed into an arcuate shape or a chamfered shape, there is an effect that the magnetic tape is further prevented from being damaged.
