Abstract

PURPOSE:To shift quickly and assuredly a magnetic head to a track which is not recorded yet in case a recording medium which is under a recording process is recorded again, by adding a means for detecting a recorded area and a means for delivering an automatic track shift instruction signal in response to the output signal of said detecting means. CONSTITUTION:The video signals are recorded to the 1st-n-th tracks of a recording medium 1. The signal recorded on the 1st track is applied to a reproduction circuit 9 and a threshold circuit 10 by a magnetic head 3. The circuit 10 checks by the level of the output signal of the circuit 9 whether the corresponding track is already recorded or not. When the level of the output signal of the circuit 9 is higher than the prescribed velue, a recorded area detecting signal is applied to an automatic shift switch 11. Then the switch 11 delivers an automatic track shift signal, and a drive circuit 5 moves the head 3 to the next track via a shift mechanism 4. This action is repeated up to the (n+1)th track.
