Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce wear of a magnetic head by decreasing the number of revolutions of a rotary magnetic heads less than that at normal operation when a magnetic tape is run or rewound in a high speed. CONSTITUTION:A rotary magnetic head 2 is fitted to a rotary drum 1 driven by a motor 3. A drum 1' is a stationary drum not turned. A magnetic tape 7 runs on the rotary head 2 with a magnetic tape feeder comprising a capstan roller 5 and a motor 6. The tape 7 is driven at a prescribed speed and the rotary head 2 is turned at a prescribed number of revolutions at the normal recording or reproduction. In case of fast feed or rewinding, the magnetic tape 7 is run at, e.g., 50 times of the normal speed. In this case, since the rotary drum 1 does not require recording or reproduction, the number of revolutions is decreased to a degree that the friction resistance at running of the magnetic tape 7 is not increased thereby decreasing the friction of the magnetic head 2.
