In a car equipped with a manual transmission, a vehicle speed sensor detects the vehicle speed, a throttle opening sensor detects the engine throttle position, a shift position sensor detects the shift position of the transmission, and a shift position sensor detects the angular position of the steering wheel. The ideal shift position is determined based on the detection data from the steering wheel position sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, and the throttle opening sensor, and the current shift position and the ideal shift position are compared. By determining whether the vehicle is in an acceleration state or a deceleration state based on the detection data of the vehicle, the optimum shift position corresponding to the state is displayed on the display means, and the steering wheel of the vehicle is determined based on the detection data from the steering wheel position sensor.
