In a conventional pattern recognition device, for example, one picture is decomposed into 120 horizontal scanning lines by a television camera and converted into a video signal, and this video signal is divided into 120 lines per horizontal scan, so one picture is calculated. It is converted into a sampled signal having 14,400 digital values, and from this sampled signal, features such as figures and characters of a picture are extracted by stroke method, pattern matching method, etc., and then recognized. Ta. In this way, with conventional equipment, the number of digital values in one image is extremely large.
This method has disadvantages in that the structure of the pattern recognition device becomes extremely complicated and the processing time becomes long.

Therefore, in order to solve this problem, it is conceivable to reduce the number of digital values of one image, that is, the number of sampling waves, as much as possible.

However, if this is done, the resolution of figures, characters, etc. in a single picture is undesirably lowered. Another possible solution is to use band compression means, but the reduction rate is at most about 1/10, so it is not very effective.

In this television camera 1, an image having, for example, a pattern of black circles as shown in FIG. 2 is decomposed into, for example, 120 horizontal scanning lines and converted into a video signal. The original video signal obtained from this television camera 1 is a composite video signal including a synchronization signal as shown in FIG. 3A. The original video signal from the television camera 1 is supplied via an amplifier 2 to a low-pass amplifier 3 that blocks signal components of a predetermined frequency (for example, 2 KHz to 7 KHz) or higher of the original video signal. As shown in FIG. 3B, an approximate video signal consisting of the envelope of the video signal in FIG. 3A is obtained.

This approximate video signal is supplied to the sampling circuit 4 and sampled. The horizontal and vertical synchronizing signals are separated from the video signal from the television camera 1 by the synchronizing separation circuit 7, and based on these synchronizing signals, the time base generator 8 generates a horizontal signal as shown in FIG. 3C, for example. Seven sampling pulses are generated for each fixed period and supplied to the sampling circuit 4. The output of the sampling circuit 4 is supplied to a hold circuit 5 and then to an A-D converter 6, from which a sampled signal of an approximate video signal is obtained. The signal from this A-D converter 6 is sent to an electronic computer 9.

Then, the output from the A-D converter 6 is stored in the work memory, and this and the pattern signal stored in the library memory 12 are compared one after another every horizontal period to recognize the pattern. . In this manner, the recognition of figures, characters, etc., that is, the rough shape, size, etc. of the patterns, is performed by comparing them with the contents of the library memory 12. In the above example, the information is video, but audio may also be used.

In this case, it is possible to determine whether the sound is the cry of an animal, the sound of a bell, or the sound of a drum. Incidentally, the pass blocking frequency of the low pass r-wave device 3 and the sampling wave number in the sampling circuit 4 are not limited to the above-mentioned example but may be arbitrary. When scanning an image to convert it into a video signal, the scanning locus can have any shape such as concentric circles, spirals, and star shapes.
