In a mechanical seal, a groove is formed around the rotating shaft of a ceramic sintered body inserted into the shaft hole, and a seal ring loosely fitted in the groove tightly contacts the inner periphery of the shaft hole by elastic expansion force. The side surfaces of the groove are formed to be inclined so that the groove width becomes narrower toward the center of the shaft, and the sloped groove side surfaces are connected to the curved groove bottom surface, while the slopes opposite to the inclined groove side surfaces are sealed. A mechanical seal characterized in that a seal surface is formed on the inner periphery of a ring and is ground only on the side surface of the groove.
