Abstract

A switch has a dielectric frame (14) carrying a series of contact members (16, 18), with aligned pair of contacts (16A, 18A) disposed at an upper surface and terminal sections (22) projecting from the frame, a movable contact member (34) pivotally mounted on one of the contacts of each pair, a housing (48) mounted on the frame and a movable actuating member (50, 52) associated with respective contact members (34) to move them to connect and disconnect contacts (16A, 18A). The actuating members (50, 52) are slidable and carry spring members slidably engaging the housing (48) and respective members (34). A membrane (42) is sealingly secured to the frame to cover the contacts (16A, 18A) and member (34).

Double in-line backup (DIP) type electric switch,
Chips are especially frequently used on printed circuit boards. Some such switches are sized to match the size of the DIP integrated circuit and are automatically inserted into selected locations on the printed circuit board by automatic placement equipment. These switches must also have a contact assembly that is not affected when the printed circuit board to which it is mounted is flow soldered. The parts of these DIP switches are easily assembled. It must be a structure in which the wires are connected to form a DIP switch.

An electrical switch in accordance with the present invention includes an electrical contact assembly having a series of aligned stationary contact members disposed within a dielectric beam. The electrical contact portion of the stationary contact member is exposed in a recess in the top surface of the dielectric frame. One of the contact portions in each recess has a movable electrical contact member pivoted thereon, electrically interconnecting the stationary contact portions at one location and electrically isolating the contact portions at another location. A housing is launch-coupled onto the dielectric frame, and seven linearly movable drive members are incorporated within the housing and operate in conjunction with respective movable contact members. Each linearly movable drive member includes a slide member containing a spring. When the sliding member moves one position within the housing, a spring can move the movable contact member to that position to electrically interconnect the stationary contact portions, and the spring and housing maintain the sliding member in this position. do. Also, when the slide member moves to another position within the housing, the spring causes the movable contact member to move to the other position (
This movement electrically isolates the stationary contact portions while the spring and housing maintain the slide member in the other position.

If a DIP switch S is constructed by sealingly bonding a membrane (42L) to the top surface of the frame (1) or sealingly bonding membranes (14L) to the upper and lower surfaces of the frame (14L), a sealed DIP switch of the electrical contact assembly is obtained, and the circuit board (2G)
The contact assembly is protected from contamination during normal flow soldering and cleaning operations and during the normal life of the switch. Therefore, there is no need to remove the tape seal currently used to protect the solder during flow soldering. In addition, the sealed DIP switch S is the same as the current DIP switch S.
All dimensions are smaller than switches, allowing for higher density packaging with a lower profile. The switch S can be housed in a tube like an integrated circuit and an automatic insertion device can be used. Furthermore, due to the structure of the switch S, the number of personal computers, their manufacturing molds, and inventory are greatly reduced.
