Abstract

PURPOSE:To form an optical connector having fixed coupling loss and high coupling reproducibility by fitting a rotation preventing means to an elastic sleeve for an optical connector for connecting opposingly the end surfaces of a pair of optical fibers in the elastic sleeve inserted into an adaptor having a cylindrical inner peripheral surface. CONSTITUTION:The elastic sleeve 7 having a slit in its axial direction is inserted into the adaptor 1 having a cylindrical inner peripheral surface. The elastic sleeve 7 has a semi-circular notched step part 9 at its end part. The rotation preventing means, e.g. a stopper 8 corresponding to the shape of the notched step part 9, is fixed on the inner surface of the adaptor 1 by spot welding or adhesives. The stopper 8 fixes the elastic sleeve 7 in the axial direction and prevents the rotation. In the optical connector, the elastic sleeve in the adaptor is prevented from rotation, so that the position of the slit of the elastic sleeve 7 is arranged always at a fixed position corresponding to a ferrule holding the optical fibers. Therefore, the coupling loss of the connector is kept always constant and the stable operation of an optical function element is obtained with high coupling reproducibility.

(2) Background of the technology An optical connector that couples source fibers for transmitting optical signals is an optical connector that optically connects the two fibers by butting the end faces of a pair of source fibers to be coupled together within an adapter. In order to operate an optical functional element operated by an optical signal with stable characteristics, it is desirable that the coupling loss in the original connector is always constant and does not change each time it is coupled.

(3) Prior Art and Problems Components of a conventional original connector are shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. An elastic sleeve 2 having a slit 3 in the axial direction as shown in Fig. 2 is fitted into an adapter 1 having a cylindrical inner circumferential surface, and both ends of the adapter are shaped by step machining, caulking, g IJ ring, etc. The elastic sleeve 2 is sealed and axially immovably mounted within the adapter 1 . The core wire 5 of the optical fiber f to be coupled is held along the central axis of an alignment member (ferrule) 4 as shown in FIG. The ferrule 4 shown in FIG. 3 has a recess 6 formed along the axial direction for manufacturing reasons. This kind of p ferrule 4 is adapter 1
A pair of ferrules to be coupled are butted against each other, and the core wire 5 of the optical fiber is inserted into the interior from both sides of the ferrule.
They are optically F-connected.

The ferrule 4 is secured to the adapter 1 in a constant circumferential direction (rotational direction) using a known means such as a fukuro nut (shown in the figure).
Fixed in position. In such a conventional optical connector, since the elastic sleeve 2 rotates within the adapter l,
The position of the slit 3 of the elastic sleeve 2 is not equal to the ferrule 4, so the optical coupling loss is not constant, and the coupling loss changes every time the fiber is connected, making it impossible to obtain stable operation of the optical functional element. There was a drawback that there was no In particular, due to the ferrule having a recess 6 as shown in Fig. 3, the slit portion of the elastic sleeve 2 enters into the recess 6 and the change in the coupling loss caused by the change in position causes a large force, so the above problem becomes noticeable. It was something like that.

(5) Structure of the Invention In order to achieve this object, in the present invention, an elastic sleeve having a slit in the axial direction is inserted into an adapter having a cylindrical inner peripheral surface, and the end surfaces of a pair of optical fibers are connected within the elastic sleeve. Place them on the original connector to be joined facing each other,

(7) As described in detail of the invention, since the original connector according to the invention prevents the elastic sleeve from rotating within the adapter, the position of the slit of the elastic sleeve is always constant relative to the ferrule holding the optical fiber. placed in position. Therefore, the coupling loss of the connector is always kept constant, and stable operation of the BCU functional element with high coupling reproducibility is obtained. In particular, for a non-cylindrical ferrule as shown in FIG. 3, the effect of the invention is significant because the coupling loss changes due to the change in the slit position tδ.
