Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate write errors, and to elevate reliability, by detecting a physical defect by a reflected ray from a tape before writing of a magnetic tape, and constituting so that writing of data to the defective part is prevented. CONSTITUTION:When writing, a reflected ray of a projector 11 is converted to an electric signal 13 by a photodetector 12. Due to a physical defect of a tape, the electric signal 13 is varied. A defect detecting part 14 detects this variation and outputs a defect detecting signal 15. A distance between a position B of a gap of a head 6 and an irradiating position A is larger than writable maximum block length. Accordingly, before a writing instruction, when a defect detecting signal is not outputted at the previous writing time, writing can be started immediately. When the defect detecting signal is outputted at the previous writing time, writing of data is inhibited, instead of which its corresponding length is skipped by an erasing signal. The skip is executed until it runs between A and B after the defect detecting signal has been annihilated, and after that, the data is written by a writing signal 5.

In order to prevent data errors from occurring due to data written to defective areas on a tape, conventional read-after-write methods were used to read and check the written data immediately after writing data to a magnetic tape.
A method is adopted in which it is determined through a check that there is some kind of defect on the magnetic tape, and the data is rewritten to write data that is unlikely to be skipped at the corresponding location on the magnetic tape. However, in order to do so, it is necessary that data pull-in errors can be reversed to position the tape. For example, in the case of an extreme error, tape positioning is impossible (h'), the entire magnetic tape is treated as a medium defect, and cannot be used thereafter. Another drawback is that complicated controls such as tape rewinding processing are required for skipping and rewriting. Furthermore, there is a possibility that good cine data may be generated due to positioning to an incorrect position during retry processing.

A light emitter 11 illuminates the base surface side of the 0, and a light receiver 12 converts the reflected light into an electrical signal 13. electrical signal 1
3 is an output corresponding to the reflected light from the tape 20, and it maintains a constant value as long as there is no defect in the tape. However, if there is a physical defect such as folding of the tape, cinching, or defective coating surface, the electric signal 13 will fluctuate. The magnetic tape defect detection unit 14 determines that there is a defect in the magnetic tape by detecting that the electric signal 13 is not within a certain range or a sudden change in the electric signal 13, and outputs a defect detection signal 15. Second

Even if this S group starts writing immediately, it is possible to write data in the write block because there is a tape defect 1d'fft. If the defect detection signal has not been output during the previous write process, data writing is prohibited and a considerable length is skipped by erasing (='”3). The distance between the tape A and 8 is 1 &-) is struck by the traveling groove, and then the data is read in by the magnetic data 1 included signal 5. Magnetic Tape Storage Control @If 16 performs this. When the defect detection signal 15 is issued during the data writing process before data writing, the erase signal is issued when the tape has traveled the distance between A and B after the defect detection signal 15 disappears after the data writing is completed. If 17 is sent and the subprocessing process is completed, the write operation can be performed immediately by the next write command. In this case, the magnetic tape storage device 6
The control unit 16B retains the previous defect detection signal.
As mentioned above, each person can find their own way to control the tape defects, but in short, it is enough to skip a considerable length that includes the defective part. Figure 4 (bow, emitter 11 and light receiver 2 or 1)
This is the body celebration 1 which indicates the number 2. Light emitter 1] &:, t, a plurality of light emitting elements 21 are arranged in a line, and a light receiver 12 has a plurality of light receiving elements 22 arranged in a line. Each of the light-emitting elements 21 and the light-receiving element 22 correspond to each other, and each corresponds to one track position on the tape surface. That is, it is possible to detect defects in magnetic tapes having multiple tracks.

As described above, in the present invention, physical defects are detected by light reflected from the tape before the magnetic tape is inserted, and data is prevented from being written to a considerable length including the defective part. Since it is configured to do so, it has the effect of eliminating magnetic tape writing and improving reliability. I got it, +M1 for data rewriting processing, etc.
41 operations are not required and can be provided with a simple configuration.
