Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of a filter for removing combustible materials by using silicon carbide filters formed to a felt-like or a woven fabric. CONSTITUTION:Commercially marketed silicon carbide fibers are formed into felt, fabrics or cloth of 30-50 porosities to produce a silicon carbide filter 1. Paste contg. powder consisting of Si alone of of 10-90wt% Si and the balance Fe, Ni, Co is coated on both end parts thereof, and is calcined at 1,100-1,800 deg.C in a nonoxidative atmosphere, whereby a metallized electrode 2 is formed. If a 24V voltage is applied between the electrodes after the engine is run in 100km-6 mode, the temp. of the filter rises to 1,000 deg.C in 10sec and the fine particulate carbon stuck thereon is burned out to regenerate the silicon carbide before the use.
