Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an electrical contact material provided with synthetically superior contact characteristics by adding specified amounts of Bi and Mn to Ag and carrying out internal oxidation. CONSTITUTION:This electrical contact material is an internally oxidized electrical contact material consisting of, by weight, 0.5-10% Bi, 1-7% Mn and the balance Ag or further contg. 0.01-3% rare earth metallic boride and/or metallic carbide. By the composition the electrical contact material has sufficiently satisfactory welding resistance, consumption resistance and low contact resistance. A material having the composition is melted and atomized. The resulting powder is internally oxidized, compressed, and sintered, and by working the sintered body by extrusion, drawing or other method, a rivet-shaped electrical contact or the like with superior contact characteristics is obtd.

There are various types of electrical contact materials such as zinc-based materials, but these electrical contact materials have excellent performance in one aspect, such as wear resistance, welding resistance, and low contact resistance characteristics, but they are not comprehensive. As a result of intensive research, we have found a satisfactory electrical contact material that is not as good as silver cadmium oxide in terms of contact characteristics.

In the electrical contact material of the present invention, if the amount of bismuth is less than 0.5, the amount of silver will be too high, and although low contact resistance characteristics can be obtained, good results will not be obtained in terms of welding resistance and wear resistance. If the content exceeds 10% by weight and manganese exceeds 7% by weight, a thick oxidation band will form on the alloy surface, making internal oxidation difficult and increasing the contact resistance. Within the range of 7% by weight, an electrical contact material with sufficiently satisfactory welding resistance, wear resistance, and low contact resistance characteristics can be obtained.

Furthermore, in another electrical contact material of the present invention, at least one of rare earth boride and metal carbide is added in addition to bismuth (15 to 10% by weight and manganese 1 to 7% by weight).
.. The reason for adding 01 to 3% by weight is that when these are dispersed in the electrical contact material, arc discharge is dispersed on the surface of the resulting electrical contact, and the discharge is no longer concentrated in the areas (3). This is because consumption decreases, and if it is less than 0.01% by weight, arc discharge will not be dispersed, and if it exceeds 3% by weight, the amount of discharge will increase and the amount of consumption will increase.

After melting the material having the composition of Example 1.2 shown in the left column of the table below and making it into atomized powder, it was heated at 400°C, 4 atm,
After 2 days of internal oxidation, the oxidized atomized powder was compressed and sintered, extruded and drawn, then cut and processed to form a crane with a head diameter of 4φ, 2 heads, height 1.1, and a crane with a leg diameter of 2.8φ. A 9-legged rivet-type electrical contact with a length of 1.6 cranes was obtained.
