Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a short circuit from occurring at both lower and side parts as well as to prolong battery service life to a great extent, by making a glass mat smaller in size than a separator and removing the lower and side parts of the glass mat, while sticking drop holders to the said removed part. CONSTITUTION:In a separating body 1, a glass mat 1 is made to be smaller in size than a separator 2 while both lower and side parts of the glass mat 1 are removed, and each of drop holders 6 consisting of an identically sized and thickened sheet, etc., are stuck together instead. Each drop holder 6 will be good enough if its mesh is smaller than that of the glass mat 1 and also such one capable of checking sedimentation of the drops, for example, the same material as that of the separating body 1. These drop holders 6 being stuck together onto the peripheral parts (lower and side parts) of the glass mat 1 are able to disconnect a contact channel between a dropped active material separated and stuck to the lower and side parts of a negative plate 4 and a dropped active material deposited inside the glass mat 1, so that these drop holders 6 are very effective to prevent a short circuit from occuring at both lower and side parts and what is more, battery service life can be prolonged to a great extent.

When a conventional lead-acid battery uses a separator 3 that combines a glass mat 1 and a separator 2, the cathode active material becomes finer and falls off due to repeated charging and discharging, and the cathode active material that falls off becomes glass. Either the active material deposited in the glass mat 1 causes a delay in liquid turbidity, or the active material deposited in the glass mat 1 comes into contact with the fallen active material deposited on the negative electrode plate 4, causing a short circuit.
This had drawbacks such as significantly shortening battery life.

The present invention eliminates the above-mentioned drawbacks, and in the case of a separator using a glass mat, the glass mat is made smaller than the separator, the lower part and the side part of the glass mantle are removed, and instead, a separator of the same size and thickness is used. To provide a separator in which a fallen object holder made of a sheet is bonded together.

In the separator 1 of the present invention, the glass mat 1 is made smaller than the separator 2, the lower part and side portions of the glass mat 1 are removed, and a fallen object holder 6 made of a sheet or the like having the same size and thickness is installed instead. It is pasted together. Fallen object holder 6
The material may be at least finer than the glass mat 1 and may be made of the same material as the separator 2, as long as it prevents the deposition of fallen substances. Also, the peripheral area of glass mat 1 (
The fallen material holder 6 attached to the bottom and sides of the negative electrode plate 4 can cut off the contact path between the fallen active material deposited on the bottom and sides of the negative electrode plate 4 and the fallen active material deposited inside the glass mat 1. It is very effective in preventing bottom short circuits and side short circuits, and can greatly extend battery life.
