Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a membrane for gas separation excellent in mechanical strength, thermal resistance, chemical resistance and gas selective permeability by specifying properties of hollow fiber subjected to plasma irradiation and conditions of plasma irradiation.
CONSTITUTION: Porous hollow fiber composed of copolymer containing ≥40 mol% acrylonitrile or polyacrylonitrile having ≥0.01kg/cm3 bubble point and ≥1l/m2.hr air permeation speed at a 1kg/cm3 pressure is spun. This fiber 6 is passed through a vacuum chamber 5 and tetramethylsilane-oxygen gas is introduced into the vacuum container from a cock 1. Cocks 1, 7 are adjusted to make the pressure in the system 0.01W10Torr. Plasma irradiation is made by applying a. c. voltage between electrodes 3, 4 by a transformer 2 in this container.
