PURPOSE:To transmit information surely, by testing an intra-station relay line periodically and automatically and selecting the relay line according to the types of communication. CONSTITUTION:An outgoing side A station exchanger selects an intra-station relay line and transmits a test pattern to a station B exchanger, and an exchanger at the station B discriminates if the line to be used is of rank A (e.g., possible for 9600 bits/sec) or of rank B (e.g., 4800 bits/sec) with a central processing device CC depending whether the received data have much error or less. The result of discrimination is transmitted to the station A, and the exchanger at the station A stores the result of test of each intra-station relay line. When a connection request comes from FAX or the like, the exchanger at the station A selects the intra-station relay line of rank A based on the result of a test, and in case of communication between telephone sets, the intra-station relay line of rank B is selected. The intra-station relay lines having unfavorable test result are informed to the maintenance personnel through typing-out, allowing to make the maintenance work easy.
