Abstract
PURPOSE:To discriminate an object picture from the other rapidly and compress information, by giving a hierachical structure of plural levels to encoded information and by decoding information of only higher-level hierachies to reproduce the whole image and by decoding information up to lower-level hierachies to restore the original picture. CONSTITUTION:A picture consisting of Lx-number lateral and Ly-number longitudinal picture elements is divided by a block consisting of 2NX2N-number picture elements to obtain the Nth blocks Bi(N)j(N), and densities Di(N)j(N) of respective blocks are obtained and are encoded, and the Nth hierachical code is added to the start of them. Next, the block Bi(N)j(N) is divided into 2X2 to obtain the (N-1)th blocks Bi(N-1)j(N-1) consisting of 2N<-1>X2N<-1>-number picture elements, and densities Di(N-1)j(N-1) of respective blocks are obtained and are encoded successively until density values of four blocks are determined on a basis of known density values of higher-level blocks, and the (N-1)th hierachical code is added. This procedure is repeated to divide the picture into the 0th blocks Bi(O)j(O) which consists of one picture element and have a binary density Di(O)J(O).
