Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the welding quality of an electric welded tube by providing a means of short circuiting between the two points in the opposite end edge parts of an open pipe by means of suitable impedances.
CONSTITUTION: An open pipe 10 is conducted into a work coil 30, thence it passes between squeeze rolls 31 to form an electric welded steel tube 20. In this device, a short circuiting conductor 40 is disposed between the work coil 30 and the rolls 31. At the manufacture of said pipe 20, the sliders 40b of the conductor 40 are brought in sliding contact with both side end edges of the pipe 10, and are brought in electrical contact with the pipe 10 by using a coil spring 44 and the like, whereby both end edges of the pipe 10 are shorted surely under approximately constant contact pressure. The impedance of the conductor 40 is correctly regulated to change the distribution of the induction current in the pipe 10, by which the weld zone is preheated. Thereby, the strength of the weld zone is improved, and the saving of electricity owing to the lowered impedance of heating load is made possible.
