Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent breaking of glass fiber and at the same time to make it possible to apply a variety of surface treating agents, by continuously carrying out a surface treatment step to apply an adhesive to reinforcing fiber rovings and a compounding step to embed the rovings in a resin for pelletization.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of glass fiber rovings treated with, for example, aminosilane are taken from a roving feed means; submerged continuously in a treating tank 2 containing an adhesive prepared from an epoxy resin of a type of glycidyl ether of bisphenol A, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone and acetone; and then dried in a driving oven 3. Then, the rovings coated with the sticky adhesive are continuously passed through the wire coating die of an extruder 4. On the other hand, from the hopper of the extruder 4, nylon 66 is fed and forms a resin coating around the rovings. Then, the coated rovings are cut to a length of 3W4mm in a take-off unit 7 to produce a pellet-form molding material. A variety of organic substances can be used as a surface treating agent, because the steps of adhesive application and compounding are carried out continuously.
