Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the catalytic isomerization of a halogenated toluene without side reactions, by using a catalyst comprising a long-life acid-type zeolite having high isomerization activity and selectivity having a crystalline structure wherein the opening of the principal cavity is composed of a 10-membered oxygen-containing ring.
CONSTITUTION: A halogenated toluene (o-, m- or p-halogenated toluene) is isomerized using a catalyst comprising a zeolite wherein the opening of the principal cavity is composed of a 10-membered ring (e.g. zeolite of ZSM-5-type, 8- type, 11-type, etc.). The composition of ZSM-5 zeolite which is a representative catalyst component is shown in the formula (M is cation; n is valency of the cation), and the zeolite is used usually as a molded article. The isomerization reaction is esp. carried out by fixed-bed gas-flow process, at 200W500°C, esp. 250W400°C.
