Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent occurrence of welding defects in welding edges of lapped plates by forming a uniform molten pool between edges of the plates and welding along the edges and thereby eliminating deviation of the molten pool.
CONSTITUTION: In forming an edge welded joint, a torch 16 is made to oscillate between edges 12 of plates 10a, 10b, 10c for a very short time at the time of ignition of arc column, that is, at starting of welding, and a molten pool free from deviation is formed over the edges 12. After molten metal is well fitted over the whole length of the edges 12, the torch 16 is moved along the direction of forming of the edge welded joint 14, and continuous bead of edge welded joint 14 is formed along the edges of the plates. The same effect can be obtained by oscillating the arc column 18 exclusively at the tip of the torch 16 between the edge 12 of the plates instead of oscillating the torch 16 at the time of ingition of arc.
