Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for inversion of the transmitting priority at the time of transfer of picture information and for retraining, by installing a forward channel to be used for transferring the picture information and a backward channel to be used for monitoring conditions of the picture information. CONSTITUTION:An encoding section 104 is set to an one-dimensional encoding mode at an initial state. Whe encoding on the 1st line is completd at the encoding section 104, the mode is automatically switched to a two-dimensional sequential encoding mode, and encodings on pictures at and after the 2nd line are performed under the two-dimentional sequential encoding mode. Picture information thus encoded is given to a forward channel of an MODEM 102 through a buffer memory 103 based on the transmission controlling procedure of a transmission controlling section 105 under the control of the transmission controlling section 105, and the information is modulated by the MODEM 102. If an abnormality is reported at the transmission controlling section 102 at this time, designation for changing the encoding mode is issued through a backward channel of an MODEM 202 to request the one-dimentional encoding mode to the originating station.
