Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an excellent flame retardant for aromatic polycarbonates, by reacting o-phenylpphenol with α-methylstyrene and reacting the obtained intermediate with PCl3.
CONSTITUTION: o-Phenylphenol is reacted with α-methylstyrene, and the obtained 2-phenyl-4-(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)phenol is reacted with PCl3 to give an organophosphoric compd., and a flame retardant is obtained as an alkali metal salt of a cyclic organophosphorus compd. of the formula (wherein R is α,α-dimethylbenzyl; M is an alkali metal) by neutralization. 0.02W5pts.wt. said flame retardant and 0W5pts.wt. organic halogen compound (e.g. hexachlorobenzene) are compounded to 100pts.wt. aromatic polycarbonate.
EFFECT: The obtained flame retardant is excellent in compatibility with an aromatic polycarbonate and does not cause clouding as far as it is used in an amount which meets the requirement of flame retarding.
