Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a good vertical orientation film of a long life by using the coating soln. prepd. by dissolving a mixture of a silane coupling agent having long chain alkyl groups and tetraalkoxy titanium or its polymer in a >=C8 hydrocarbon type higher alcohol. CONSTITUTION:The silane coupling agent expressed by the formula I or II (R1 is C10-24 normal alkyl, R2 is C1-4 alkyl, R3 is C1-4 alkyl, aryl) and the tetraalkoxy titanium expressed by the formula III or IV (R4 is C1-10 alkyl, n is 0-10) are dissolved in the higher alcohol expressed by the formula V (m is 8-20,k is 0-m). The ratios of the silane coupling agent and the tetraalkoxy titanium is good if Ti/Si is within a 0.1-10 range, and the concn. of the sum of both is kept at around 20wt%. Orientation films are formed by using the coating soln. prepd. by thickening said soln. by adding about 0.5wt% hydroxypropylcellulose and further adding a polydimethyl siloxane of >=350 deg.C b.p. for the purpose of improving the smoothness of the coating film. Thereby, the superior vertical orientation film is formed.
