Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize the length of a liner and reduce the weight of a cylinder block, by providing the inside surface of the liner and that of the part of the cyl inder block located near the top of the liner, so that both the inside surfaces extend as an identical circumferential surface.
CONSTITUTION: The inside surface of a liner 20 and that of a cylinder block 10 are cut to the inside diameter of an upper step 13 by a boring machine. After that, the inside surface of the liner 20 and that of the part of the cylinder block 10 located near the top 22 of the liner are cut to the bottom of the upper step 13 by a honing machine so that the inside circumferential surface 21 of the liner 20 serves as a sliding contact surface for a piston 30 and the inside circumferential surface 12 of the part of the cylinder block 10 located near the top 22 of the liner coincides with that 21 of the liner. Since the cylinder block 10 is manufactured in said manner, no burr remains on the top 22 of the liner 20 and the entire inside circumferential surface 21 of the liner is used for the piston 30 to slide on.
