Abstract

PURPOSE: An aluminum compound is supported on a silica carrier and calcinated over a temperature at which the aluminum compound decomposes to prepare a catalyst, which is used to produce high-purity tertiary olefin from an alkyl tertalkyl ether in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A tertialy olefin is produced from an alkyl tertiary alkyl ether such as methyl tert.-butyl ether wherein a catalyst is used, which is produced by allowing a silica carrier to support an aluminum compund and calcinating them over a temperature at whish the aluminum compound decomposes. The calcination is effected under such a condition as the silica coexists with the aluminum compound. The calcination temperature is in the range from the point at which the aluminum compound supported on the silica carrier decomposes to 1,500°C. The aluminum compound is 0.1W100, preferably 1W50pts. per 100pts. of the carrier.
